Adrian Mack Georgia Straight If the film suffers from some uneven performances, Nick Ferruci hits every right note as Elder Smith, especially when he uses compassion and humour to leverage a human response out of his starchier and more nervous companion. Kayleigh P Despite not being familiar with the Mormon faith, this is a good story. It starts out strong and ends strong, though how they got into each other felt rather abrupt. Regardless, it’s a solid movie and story. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/28/24 Full Review Eduardo R Not the highest budget film but it's a well made movie with a really sweet and touching story. Great acting from the protagonists. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/03/24 Full Review jona i The film creates a very intriguing situation. However, its scene setup for missionary life could have used more innovation. A few subtle details could also have helped the storytelling; like, more hints and understanding into Merrill's will slipping. Also, there were moments of contrivance and unreasonableness, such as Smith's pot-smoking. More planting would have helped pay these off. In general, it's bland. But it has its successful moments of artistic merit. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member As a gay, former Mormon missionary (and decidedly ex-Mormon) myself, I found this trilogy remarkably powerful, fresh, and interesting. As has been the case with many Mormon-centric films and theatre productions (including the Broadway musical The Book of Mormon), "The Falls" presents some glaring errors in portrayal of Mormonism and missionary life that could so easily have been corrected with a good ex-Mormon script consultant. Regardless, the "The Falls" trilogy mostly hits the right notes, and left me deeply satisfied. Personally, I only had one gay Mormon mission companion (as far as I know) and I had zero attraction to him. But there remains a "what if" fantasy there for me regarding other elders I was not paired with. After my missionary time (I was sent from my dad's Idaho potato farm to Chicago for two years) I attended Brigham Young University and lived in Salt Lake City for many years. I have known people who mirror nearly every character in the "The Falls" film trilogy—especially RJ and Chris and Chris' eventual wife. I have seen so many well-intentioned straight marriages fall apart with varying results for the participants and children, and have seen plenty of gay Mormons (often after church excommunication or self-chosen membership removal) find same-sex partners and move ahead with life—often including the children of the failed attempted straight-marriages. While I turned out to be more of an RJ (albeit one who decidedly left Mormonism and organized religion behind) than a Chris, I dated many "Chris" types; it became clear that my un-religious state made me non-compatible with guys who wanted to stay in the church. This trilogy presented a mostly on-point view of Mormonism, but ultimately it was a story that reflects many cultures and religions, and viewing it with an open mind and open heart could really benefit couples (gay and straight) and families of many faiths and creeds. Kudos to the exceptional cast for the remarkably believable performances. I'm likely to watch the entire trilogy again and again. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member such a heartfelt movie with two amazing leads! It made me cry! Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member I didn't have much expectation for this, but I was wrong! Beautiful movie that hit too close to home with its message. There was a lot I could relate with which made it more powerful. A little slow in the beginning, but a fantastic movie. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Read all reviews
