Critics Consensus

Layered performances from Nicole Kidman and director-star Jason Bateman add extra depth to The Family Fang's sharply observed look at domestic dysfunction.

Jake Wilson The Age (Australia) No masterpiece, certainly, but substantially more interesting than comparable productions such as Captain Fantastic. Rated: 3/5 Nov 30, 2016 Full Review Scott Marks San Diego Reader Bateman and Nicole Kidman, too old to convincingly pull off this sibling pair, would have fared better as the parents. Rated: 2/5 May 12, 2016 Full Review Steve Pond TheWrap "The Family Fang" is kind of messy but also fun and touching; it's a definite step forward for Bateman as a director ... May 6, 2016 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson As a dysfunctional family specimen, "The Family Fang" boasts a compelling draw with these fine actors guiding the ship in their top forms. Rated: 4/5 Oct 13, 2024 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review The film has much to say about what constitutes art, and how the level of one's devotion to their vocation (art or otherwise) affects those around them. Rated: 3.5/4 Apr 15, 2022 Full Review Pablo O. Scholz Clarín The result... will have to do with how one sees at their elders, whether or not they are as eccentric as the Fangs. Megan e This was a really good adaptation! I understood some of the alterations. Casting was spot on! Really good performances! Worth watching! 4 stars Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/25/24 Full Review AJ M I caught this movie on Peacock last night. It was poignant, funny, sad and disturbing all at the same time. The ending was unexpected. I love Christopher Walken so the movie was that much more exceptional. Jason Bateman has definitely developed his directors chops and Nicole Kidman is fantastic as usual. Go enjoy this movie if you like watching a dysfunctional family as a slow motion train crash. Cheers. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member I loved this movie - moving performances. A well-realised and faithful version of an original and exciting novel. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Amazing movie, amazing acting. It's like an archetype of parenting, all the bad parts of it taken up to over 9000. This movie kinda broke me, and then, made me whole again. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member Awesome film, lousy ending. I just couldn't believe that such brilliancy potential went to waste. It is just as if they had trouble with schedule or something... but definitely 75% great. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Read all reviews
