30 years after Edward Burns' "The Brothers McMullen" wowed critics and audiences -- winning the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival -- with its exploration of the lives and struggles of three Irish American brothers from Long Island, New York, the family returns in the long-awaited follow-up THE FAMILY MCMULLEN. The new film tracks the romantic entanglements of a now 50-something Barry McMullen (Burns) and his 20-something kids, as well as his brother Patrick (Michael McGlone) and widowed sister-in-law Molly (Connie Britton), each facing unexpected romantic hurdles of their own.

What once seemed fresh and charming now feels rehearsed and rehashed. The Family McMullen has the air not of indie cinema but of a Hallmark movie. Go to Full Review

Driven along by Seamus Egan's sprightly Irish flute score, The Family McMullen is, like the "Brothers", extremely low-key and mild, and I found that to be just what I wanted. Go to Full Review

The Family McMullen is engaging enough to remind us why Burns broke through decades ago. Go to Full Review

It can be a rough ride at times, but "The Family McMullen" remains appealing and comfy, taking on the ways of sex, aging, and impulsivity with a gentle, periodically humorous approach. Go to Full Review

tracey m Oct 24 This movie was pure joy. It's a must see, especially if you are a big fan of the original. It was so fun to visit with the characters again after 30 years- while much is different, not much has really changed! The story is so heartwarming that you can overlook the occasional corniness. All the sarcasm and fast talk you remember from the original are on display again in full force, particularly in the scenes with Burns and McGlone. Though the schtick is completely familiar, the jokes still manage to delight. All in all, a very worthy sequel. See more VMI70 Oct 17 Carried forward "The Brothers McMullen" thirty years later. Another Ed Burns take on family and romantic relationships centered around the Irish American McMullen family, this time moved to gentrified Brooklyn from suburban Long Island. The family's romantic relationships are on some levels more complicated and more expansive than their suburban Irish American background in the first one, on others just similar issues to the first. If you liked the first movie, you will like this one. There are some things that seem rom-com formalistic, at times it could be mistaken for a Hallmark TV movie, and being from the NYC area, some of the scenes of Brooklyn streets, even in gentrified areas, with almost no people on them day or night seem unreal, and it might have been helpful to know what these people did for a living other than interact with each other,. You only learn that one is a plumber because that is how he is introduced into the plot. But it isn't a movie about life in the city, it is about Ed Burns' views of personal and family relationships. We may like it more than some, as we come from a NYC suburban Irish- American family and relate to some of it, but this time the people involved go well beyond just Irish American experiences. Certainly worth viewing, a bit surprised at it being presented as a single night Fathom presentation instead of a wider release. Maybe it is just a step towards a streaming release. See more uphillputt Oct 16 If you were a fan of the first movie youll enjoy this installment. Tracie Ellis-Ross is a nice addition to the story.
