Dan Morgan (Mark Wahlberg) loves his quiet suburban life as a devoted husband, father of three and successful car salesman. But that's only half the story. Decades earlier, he was an elite government assassin tasked with eliminating the world's deadliest threats. When enemies from his past track him down, Dan packs his unsuspecting wife (Michelle Monaghan), angsty teen daughter, pro-gamer teen son and adorable 10-month-old baby into their minivan and takes off on an impromptu cross-country road trip to Las Vegas. Determined to protect his family -- while treating them to the vacation of a lifetime -- Dan must put his long-dormant skills into action, without revealing his true identity

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Heavy on rote action and light on laughs, The Family Plan aimlessly imitates an array of films that tell similar stories -- and often in more compelling fashion.

Barry Levitt Empire Magazine A comic thriller that isn’t especially funny or particularly exciting, The Family Plan is an overlong slog that struggles to make use of its game cast. Rated: 2/5 Dec 21, 2023 Full Review Kevin Maher Times (UK) The premise for this action comedy is solid... yes. Even intriguing. The execution, however, is slipshod, bland and at times downright distracted. Rated: 2/5 Dec 19, 2023 Full Review Richard Roeper Chicago Sun-Times That scenario is played for laughs in the goofy, occasionally amusing yet tone-deaf and casually violent Apple TV+ film... Rated: 2.5/4 Dec 16, 2023 Full Review Martin Carr martincarr.co.uk The Family Plan has a right to be this good. Against all odds, this Apple backed action-comedy sticks the landing, not only making this one of the best Mark Wahlberg movies no one has seen, but also reminds audiences why he was Oscar-nominated. Oct 16, 2024 Full Review Pallavi Keswani The Hindu In The Family Plan, a lot of opportunities are surrendered in favour of dull characters, and an even duller plot. Jan 19, 2024 Full Review Jennifer Green Common Sense Media This family-oriented comedy-adventure is best when the humor balances the action, but when it descends into more graphic violence, it loses what makes it original and limits its age appeal. Christopher D Crap, crap and more crap. So many movies did this premise better. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/17/24 Full Review J D starts off strong and then disintegrates into a muddle of cliches and predictability...any movies set in Vegas should be proceeded with caution Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/16/24 Full Review jim b Not just a shoot em up movie like John Wick movies. This movie adds humor and heartfelt family interactions which makes it one of the best action movies I’ve ever seen. And it’s not just about 2 dimensional heroes and villians but about real human beings who have good and bad character traits. Loved it! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/03/24 Full Review Gabrielle G Predictable action flick with abhorrent writing that translates to mind blowing decision making on the characters part. The only brightside to this flick is Mark Wahlburg is in it, though he can only do so much with the script given. I dislike the Mother character extremely. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/11/24 Full Review Jace E Forget that this movie has the most generic title since "Crazy, Stupid, Love." "The Family Plan" is exactly what you would expect from a Mark Wahlberg family flick. It's a bit predictable and it feels like it's a movie that's already been made but there are moments unique to 2023 throughout. With that in mind, I had a good time with this one. There are countless implausible moments (sleeping family chase scene) but there are also some surprisingly tender bits ("I have something they don't have..."). Where this movie thrives is in the intrafamily dynamics. Though each character's motives might be a bit surface level, the film dedicates time to each of their stories. This is a movie that I would happily turn on again, which is better than the string of films that I wrapped up 2023 with. Best Character: Dan Best Scene: "You're My Eyes" Note: His name is actually Van! Note 2: Diaper Face. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/16/24 Full Review Sonal S Wahlberg’s movies are typically quite pointless but I had hoped for at least some good action sequences. However, even those were beyond disappointing. How this movie ever came about to be released is beyond me… Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/14/24 Full Review Read all reviews
