Owen Gleiberman Variety Xu Haofeng's historical martial-arts thriller is a bit choppy, but its deadly Wing Chun fight scenes have passion and zing. Jun 3, 2016 Full Review Odie Henderson RogerEbert.com This is a juicy, beach read of a movie, the kind of overstuffed story you'd devour in book form while slumming on the sand under an umbrella. Rated: 3/4 Jun 3, 2016 Full Review Glenn Kenny New York Times Hefty daggers, staggering broadswords and even battle axes are unsheathed and duly deployed throughout. Jun 2, 2016 Full Review Jamie Healy Radio Times Boasting award-winning action choreography, the film acts as a fine showcase for various weapons styles, ranging from butterfly blades to battle axes. Rated: 4/5 Aug 22, 2024 Full Review Allen Almachar The MacGuffin Fans of kung fu and martial arts films will most likely get something out of this. For the casual viewer interested in diving into the genre, I'm not sure this is the best place to start. Rated: B- Jul 13, 2020 Full Review Brent McKnight The Last Thing I See Xu Haofeng's latest has on obvious affinity for the martial arts films that inspired it, and has an authentic period wuxia feel, but never steps beyond those boundaries. Steve C Good moves. Good weapons. Okay movie. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/24/23 Full Review Liam D A interesting and action packed story This Drama is a underrated martial arts film Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/29/21 Full Review Audience Member I think the writer got confused, did not find out what a transition is, a "what follows what," because an ensuing scene appeared out of the air. IN order to approach the "Grandmaster," the screenplay couldn't decide whether it sought greatness or popcorn. Tried hard, or maybe the writer was drunk. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member This is an incredibly underrated and unheard-of film. The Kung fu scenes are amazing as is the philosophy behind the fighting which is never really shown in movies. Go watch it to gain insight into the art of Kung fu. (Underrated Chinese move). Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member What the hell did I just watch? I am completely confused. Three stars purely for the great choreography. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review troy k It gets confusing, but it's a damn good movie. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
