StephenPaul C LOL, the funniest 01 hour: and 41 minutes ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/15/23 Full Review Audience Member Here's an interesting, little-known fact: Before South Park, Comedy Central used to have a wide gambit of comedic styles, but when South Park came out and was such an overwhelmingly massive hit, Comedy Central COMPLETELY re-branded itself as the Comedy Network with Attitude (my own words, not theirs), and this resulted in the destruction of more upbeat and/or high-brow shows on their roster such as Doctor Katz: Professional Therapist & Mystery Science Theater 3000. I mention this because ever since South Park, almost all popular comedy has been aggressive, edgy comedy - rare are the Jim Gaffigan's, and more are the Louis CK's & the Bill Burr's, with even smart comics like Dan Cummins dropping their more intellectual comedy for more aggressive material (with their own intellectual spin, at the very least). Gabriel Iglesias feels very much like a unique fusion of pre-South Park upbeat, make-you-smile comedy, with post-South Park mature themes, occasional innuendo and one or two quick, well-timed cuss words, and for this I have been a fan of his since his first full-length special. With each special, he does adopt more mature stances but he always has a heart, sometimes even using it to make his audiences feel genuine emotion, but mostly he uses it to keep everyone in his audience happy, even when he takes a momentary tangent that's a bit nasty or mean-spirited. However, The Fluffy Movie, while not his funniest material, is his most refined work to date, as he actually has an entire ending portion where he opens up in a way that he (and almost any other stand-up before him) has never done before, drawing in a lot less laughter but keeping his audience enthralled. Similar to how George Carlin used his deeply intellectual breakdowns of his societal observations to keep his audiences invested between jokes, Iglesias uses his unique empathetic humanity. Heck, it was here that I first discovered his mother died, and the way he uses this as a way to tell a bittersweet story involving his long-lost father is genuinely touching and heart-wrenching, and despite it all, it all leads to another story, current-day, that details the similar maturity of his adopted son and a final punchline that breaks the sad tension and allows the show to end on an effective laugh. As many professional critics point out, this isn't one of the funniest comic specials of all time, but I would argue it is consistently funny before it goes tragic for a bit. It's rare that he got a hard, laugh-out-loud response from me, but even having repeatedly viewed it, I can't think of a single groaner either - it's all varying degrees of "pretty funny" material, with the occasional outright winner. It was also nice seeing professional funnymen Ron White and Tommy Chong make cameo appearances in the start, as I quite like both of them as well, despite these three being notably different in their comedic approaches. But overall, it's just a really good, high-production stand-up special that takes some time out to elicit emotion rather than just 90 minutes of laughs. Ben Sachs Chicago Reader He's a crowd-pleaser reminiscent of Robin Williams, inserting funny sounds and vocal impersonations into nearly every line and alternating raunchy material with moments of unabashed sentimentality. Aug 7, 2014 Full Review Peter Keough Boston Globe For the most part, Fluffy's material is just that - fluff, with a touch now and then of bile and bad taste. Rated: 1.5/4 Jul 31, 2014 Full Review Louis Black Austin Chronicle Inherently funny, with a terrific sense of timing, an amazing gift for mimicry, and an ability to perfectly imitate all kinds of everyday sounds, Iglesias is always charming and frequently laugh-out-loud funny. Rated: 2.5/5 Jul 31, 2014 Full Review John Fink The Film Stage Iglesias is a likable guy, but as far as concert experiences go, this one does little to break away from the pack. Rated: C Mar 26, 2016 Full Review Martin Tsai Critic's Notebook The whole film would have seemed staged if Mr. Iglesias hadn't proven he's got the goods by delivering comedic gold.
