Audience Member Wandering demigod Hercules (Harris) goes to visit an old friend, only to find that he is dead, and his now-grown daughter is ruling his city with great cruelty. Hercules, believing she must have been misled by her advisors, sets out to restore justice to his friend's kingdom and to put his daughter back on the right path. "The Fury of Hercules" is one of the better "sword and sandal" movies I've seen. The camerawork and editing are competent, the acting is better (both the original actors and those doing the English dub), the story more coherent (the one part that bothered me--a apparent zombie girl--eventually became clear), and the sets and costumes showing a decent budget (the Greek mercenaries in the town actually look like ancient Greek soldiers!). Even the obligatory dance number during the obligatory feast in Hercules' honor, is more stylish than silly. On the acting front, Brad Harris makes a good Hercules. He is charismatic, handsome, musclebound, and shows some acting ability. The two female leads--Mara Berni, as Queen Conidia, and Luisella Boni, as her lead handmaiden Daria--are also gorgeous as well as talented actresses. Weasel-faced Serge Gainsbourg is the right mix of slimey and creepy as the film's main bad guy, and Alan Steel (who stunk up the screen in both the other two moves I've seen him in) gives a surprisingly good performance as a mute mercenary captain. The plot appears to be the one that's standard in most films of this type (buff hero arrives in town ruled by evil, one or more powerful women lust for him, they attempt to control him but fail, and he eventually wins the day and restores freedom and happiness), but it's deployed someone more effectively than in, for example, "Hercules vs. the Moon Men" (review here). The story is well paced, and if this sort of stuff is your cupt of tea, you won't be bored. (You might be a little annoyed at the failed comic relief characters that are introduced in the second half of the film, but I think you'll be entertained well enough.) The Fury of Hercules Starring: Brad Harris, Mara Berni, Luisella Boni, Serge Gainsbourg, and Alan Steel Director: Gianfranco Parolini Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Read all reviews
