Shea Whigham (American Hustle), Olivia Munn (X-Men: Apocalypse), and Frank Grillo (The Grey) star in this gritty, edge-of-your-seat crime-thriller. Whigham is Parker, a down-on-his-luck social worker who finds himself in over his head when he tries to protect his client from her recently paroled husband. Critics Consensus

With a sturdy framework but too many unnecessary parts, The Gateway leads to a bit of a B-movie dead end.

Randy Myers San Jose Mercury News You might have seen something like this before, but this one is well-made and pulls you into its web. Rated: 3/4 Sep 23, 2021 Full Review Phil Hoad Guardian Not quite credible enough to stand up as a gritty, 70s-esque social drama, and lacking the focus of the Training Day-style urban thriller it's marketed as, Michele Civetta's second feature is an awkward but passably entertaining blend of both. Rated: 3/5 Sep 21, 2021 Full Review John Anderson Wall Street Journal The Gateway is a bit like the movie's drug robbery -- they know how to get in, but don't know how to get out. It's Mr. Whigham who keeps you watching. Sep 3, 2021 Full Review Ema Sasic Next Best Picture It's better to rip the Band-Aid off right away: A lot doesn't work with this movie. It's described as a crime thriller, but it lacks on the thrilling part. The story is pretty simple and doesn't do a whole lot to hook viewers in. Rated: 3/10 Jun 21, 2022 Full Review Carla Hay Culture Mix The Gateway is such a generic and unimaginative rehash of many other crime dramas, it's likely to be soon forgotten after people see it. It's yet another story about a hero who has an 'against all odds' struggle against gangster thugs. Dec 29, 2021 Full Review Peter Gray This is Film The Gateway, which could have been a serviceable action film or a gritty drama, unfortunately does itself a disservice by attempting to be both and failing to commit to either. Jason F I live in St. Louis. My main complaint is that this film is supposed to be set in St. Louis, and while I did not know this going in, I knew this was not shot in St. Louis, Right away. It really did not look like St. Louis, at all. The buildings, the streets, the casinos, the police cars, even the sunlight did not look like St. Louis. Beyond that I enjoyed it. Shea Wigham was good, Bruce Dern was great. Olivia Munn was good, as was the girl who played her daughter. Grillo always plays a good pompous ahole. The bad guys were a little suspect. St. Louis does not have much of a Mexican/Cartel criminal element. Overall I did like the movie and SPOILER it does have a downer ending. I feel like these types of movies, small independent movies, are rarely at the theaters anymore, so I was happy to see it on the big screen. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/13/21 Full Review Anthony Good movie with good acting. Storyline a little boring at times and it didn’t even come close to looking like St. Louis where the movie was supposed to be set. We haven’t had electric street cars since 1966 except the new Delmar area train and that train just started running off and on. But it was still entertaining. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/08/21 Full Review Audience Member Long-winding drama with country oldies... Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member When a social worker gets a little too wrapped up in his client and her dirtbag ex-con hubby comes home, things explode. It's got that made-for-tv feel. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member A fun, well acted, well made noir thriller! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Loved the film. Strong message, great action, keeps you on edge start to finish!
