Plucky Brit Patricia Chandler (Phyllis Calvert) goes to visit the large Italian estate she just inherited from a distant relative. In tidying the mansion, she accidentally throws out an unattractive painting, the Golden Madonna, which is a good luck talisman for the local villagers. Their outrage causes Patricia and former military officer Michael Christie (Michael Rennie) to follow the painting to Naples, where art thief Johnny Lester (David Greene) plans to sell it to a wealthy collector.
