Timon Singh Empire Magazine Not the reunion between Lau and Leung that fans might have been craving, nor the decadent deep-dive into Hong Kong’s boom-time that the film could and should have been. Rated: 2/5 Jan 12, 2024 Full Review Wendy Ide Observer (UK) This has the brash swagger of The Wolf of Wall Street, but the labyrinthine intricacies of the case may present something of a challenge to anyone not well versed in stock market manipulation. Rated: 2/5 Jan 7, 2024 Full Review Kevin Maher Times (UK) Chong displays a confused and maximalist approach to film-making, throwing everything at the screen, including different film styles, stocks and interstitial musical montages, in the vain hope that kinetic energy might be mistaken for dramatic power. Rated: 2/5 Jan 5, 2024 Full Review Mihir Fadnavis Firstpost The Goldfinch is dripping with sentimentality, twee visuals and ponderous emotive pull, but is short on logic, a strong narrative and believability. May 15, 2024 Full Review Andy Klein FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) I could watch these two guys forever, and hope to watch these two guys forever. Feb 1, 2024 Full Review Wade Major FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) You're watching tour de force filmmaking, acting, and a very complicated story that is made bite-sized accessible to the audience. ALVIN H Entertaining Hong Kong movie about the excesses of wealth of 1980s Hong Kong and the manipulation of the stock market. A great reunion of HK’s Andy Lau and Tony Leung since 2000s Infernal Affairs! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/10/24 Full Review from HK Good Story, Love the actors and actresses Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/10/24 Full Review T W Stylish, occasionally fun, clearly inspired by the Wolf of Wall Street Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/06/24 Full Review xue Always the best two actor gods! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/05/24 Full Review Hao Ian L Chong's maximalist, in-your-face approach to telling a criminal conspiracy story such as The Goldfinger may score itself some style points, but ends up doing more harm than good with how overwhelming and overwhelming it can feel. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/21/24 Full Review DanTheMan 2 Bond-adjacent title aside, The Goldfinger throws everything at the screen, including different film styles, stocks and interstitial musical montages, in the vain hope that kinetic energy might be mistaken for dramatic power. It's far from the reunion between Lau and Leung that fans of Hong Kong cinema have been waiting for, instead coming across as more of a hollow wet fart in this by-the-numbers, overcomplicated Wolf of Wall Street clone without any of the filmmaking confidence to pull it off successfully. It all feels like it's been run through a mainland China viewing board to become a curiously uninvolving work that takes what sounds like a potentially fascinating story and somehow manages to render it mostly inert due to a disappointingly shallow treatment. Lau and Leung are more than capable actors but with a standardised narrative that doesn't challenge them in any way, they ultimately sleepwalk their way through the film. Ultimately, The Goldfinger is a hard one to recommend, there's no fun to be had here, it's all brutally shallow and lacking in dexterity, only really worth something to those well-versed or interested in stock market manipulation. I'm sure there will be an inevitable sequel, presumably titled The Thunderball or The Goldeneye... Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/25/24 Full Review Read all reviews
