John DeFore Hollywood Reporter The English-language Israeli production may not wow stateside genre fans, but its approach to the source material is emotionally and intellectually sincere, enacted seriously, if not always engrossingly, by cast and crew. Feb 1, 2019 Full Review Noel Murray Los Angeles Times A well-crafted and idiosyncratic supernatural thriller, the film plays like a mix of "Frankenstein," "The Witch," and some of the Coen brothers' more explicitly Jewish movies. Jan 31, 2019 Full Review Ryan Larson Ghastly Grinning The Golem is a gorgeous movie that pays respect to it's roots while also updating the legend, quite terrifyingly, to be relevant with the times. It's a feminist historical set piece that is sure to fcatch your eye, a home run of a debut film. Jun 24, 2020 Full Review Emilie Black Cinema Crazed Unfortunately, the first part lingers on too long and ends up testing the viewer's patience and care for the characters before the creature shows up and things take a turn for the more interesting. Rated: 2.5/5 Apr 11, 2020 Full Review Laura Pacheco Mora EscribiendoCine Despite having violence almost forced into its narrative, The Golem is a reflection on maternity. [Full Review in Spanish] Rated: 5/10 Dec 3, 2019 Full Review Diego Batlle La Nación (Argentina) Too intellectual for horror film lovers and too extreme for those looking for art cinema, The Golem ends up being - in several senses - halfway. Floyd W I thought this was a brilliant depiction of a golem. I was getting tired of Hollywood movies showing a golem as a ten foot mud creature. It was wonderful to see a golem written by someone in the Jewish community. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/19/24 Full Review Alex R It's a movie about oppression, but not very well done. More like an Lifetime Channel movie or a lot of Turkish movies that are out like Ertugrul. I tried it after watching Demon (Poland, 2015), which was excellent. It's not even in the same ballpark. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/01/24 Full Review Domenic M Not a horror movie at all. Boring and Cheesey Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/05/23 Full Review Audience Member A poignant examination of grief through a new take on a classic piece of Jewish folklore. Definitely a hidden gem. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/31/22 Full Review Dick C I like this type of genre, Religious, especially "the Jewish Frankenstein" based on its legend... BTW, it's shot in Kyiv, Ukraine, which is in war... Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/05/22 Full Review Audience Member We were excited for the "new" take on folklore but this movie is laughably bad. The acting is horrible, the writing is unintentionally hilarious (modern American idiom in 17th-century Lithuania), and the music seems meant for a 1995 action-thriller.
