Critics Consensus

The Grand Seduction can't quite live up to the classic dramedies it seems to consciously evoke, but ambles sweetly enough to charm viewers in its own right.

Martin Tsai Los Angeles Times The remake never manages to drum up much excitement for its sleepy hamlet rousing or for its characters, finally filled with purpose. Dec 23, 2014 Full Review Mark Kermode Observer (UK) At best, this aspires to the whimsical charm of Local Hero; at worst, it simply steals from it. Rated: 2/5 Aug 31, 2014 Full Review Donald Clarke Irish Times This is all about duels between rugged veterans. Cheery Gleeson and craggy Gordon Pinset steal the show. Rated: 3/5 Aug 29, 2014 Full Review Alex Behan Stuff.co.nz Based on a charming French film of the same name, it's safe, laid-back Sunday night viewing involving rural Canadians attempting to play a ridiculous game called cricket. Oct 18, 2021 Full Review Richard Crouse Richard Crouse A comedy with a poignant edge. Rated: 4/5 Feb 1, 2021 Full Review Brian D. Johnson Maclean's Magazine The Grand Seduction is not really a romcom. It's sweet farce in the Waking Ned Devine genre, the tale of a village making an idiot out of a city slicker-a narrative heist, so to speak. Aug 7, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews

Tracey A [SPOILERS] I was really looking forward to watching this film because of the local Canadian actors and the lead, Brendan Gleeson, who it is always a great joy to watch in all his roles. The movie tries to be a feel-good movie about a town of loveable quirky characters, but it ends up being about a bunch of self-interested horrible people trying to ensnare a hapless doctor. We're about 4/5 of the way through and it's cringeworthy all the way so far. I feel so bad for the doctor. Not sure we want to finish it even though we're so close to the end. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/08/24 Full Review X O This is really a very bad remake of local hero 1983. Grand seduction just doesn't have the same character or dryness or timing that local hero does. Watch the original. It is so much better. So much better. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 12/31/23 Full Review Avalon T One of the funniest movies I've enjoyed lately. Great acting, plot is not complicated but original. Just an all around fun, feel good movie- there are is so few of them lately. Spoiler alert- no graphic violence in this one. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/28/24 Full Review Tonja V It was nice to watch a movie that reminds you how hard work is fulfilling vs handouts. It was also interesting to see how the people all agreed that they wanted to continue living in their community vs relocating somewhere else to find work. So they worked as a community to make positive changes including cleaning up the area. I liked how they put a love interest in the movie, but it was not the usual sappy stuff. Great ending too, but I won't reveal. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/30/23 Full Review Maysa A A great comedy with a big heart and great acting. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/29/23 Full Review dave s In Don McKellar's The Grand Seduction, an outsider arrives under unlikely circumstances in the Newfoundland fishing village of Tickle Head, eventually finding himself enamored with the town and its inhabitants. Sound familiar? Along the same lines as The Shipping News, Local Hero, and Waking Ned Devine, among others, the idea is nothing original. In fact, it is essentially a remake of a Quebecois film from a decade earlier. Regardless, it is a feelgood movie that works, despite the implausible storyline. The characters are eccentrically interesting, the scenery is beautiful, and Brendan Gleeson is wonderful as the ringleader trying to lure a doctor to commit to living and practicing in the isolated hamlet. It's not a great movie, but it sure is fun. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews
