As savagely satirical as it is gorgeously surreal, "The Great Buddha+" is something else again - an outrageous, poignant punk Taiwanese black comedy marking the feature arrival of fresh filmmaking talent Huang Hsin-Yao. Go to Full Review

Which may sound good, but 'The Great Buddha+' is one of those movies that's much more rewarding to think about than it is to watch. Go to Full Review
John DeFore The Hollywood Reporter 07/05/2018
Most importantly, the pic gets laughs out of the class system without being glib about its cruelties. The gulf between rich and poor clearly matters to Huang, who poignantly shows how poverty robs even the dead of dignity. Go to Full Review

It's an awkwardly funny and bleak black comedy on unbridled voyeurism that reflects cynically on the human condition. Go to Full Review

01/22/2021 born in tw and moved to USA when i was young, always thought what would have happen to me, my family, friends... this movie has that independent ,offbeat, more real than hollywood, feel of a taiwan i think i remember... See more 06/21/2019 Definitely worth watching. See more 12/25/2018 The depressing black and white images of the poor and the colorful world of the rich. Despair and loneliness, it is difficult to summon up the courage to look back. Think of the original "Manchester by the sea" feeling, but it is very different. After all, the latter is the pain of happiness breakdown, and "Buddha" is born to set the hopeless. Narrativa curiosa, com intervenções do diretor na estória em branco e preto. Bem..não me convenceu... See more 06/23/2018 We had the pleasure of seeing this at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, 2018, with the writer/director present and offering a Q&A after the screening. The film reminded me of some others, in a good way: "Clerks," not just due to it being primarily in black and white, but also for giving a glimpse into the mundanity and daily tribulations of people in unglamorous jobs/ positions in life, who "make things work" without much recognition from those of us privileged enough to not have to pay attention; but where "Clerks" was original at the time of its release, it may not have aged well...in contrast, we think "The Great Buddha+" may have a bit more to offer the world in the long term... "Amelie," for its slight sadness, quirky minor characters, vague sense of nostalgia and the surreal, use of musical themes and periodic narration; however, "The Great Buddha +" is definitely darker, in spite of its well-placed humor. I think Hsin-yao Huang is a person with more to say, and I look forward to finding out what that might be in the future, if his films' release is broad enough so that I will have the opportunity. See more 05/25/2018 A scabrous black comedy from Taiwan. There is a lot to savour from this tragicomedy that takes a scathing yet whimsical look at the ironies of Taiwanese modern society. Shot from the POVs of a bunch of oddball lowlifes, The Great Buddha+ is testament of how a solid screenplay can lift a low-budget film. Those who appreciate the droll humour of Jim Jarmusch's features will find much to relish here. See more Read all reviews
