Critics Consensus

The Green Inferno may not win writer-director Eli Roth many new converts, but fans of his flair for gory spectacle should find it a suitably gruesome diversion.

It's mostly just sad - not because Roth takes such a sharp scalpel to the social justice movement, but because he swings a baseball bat, and misses by a mile. Go to Full Review

Flat-pack acting, frat-boy screenwriting (the portrayal of activists is spitefully dumb) and retro gore combine with smug throwback neocolonialist racism and unfunny jokes about diarrhoea, dope and Scooby-Doo. Go to Full Review

es, Roth's film has its expected moments of high transgression, but you can never get away from the fact that all these references have been attached to the most hackneyed teen slasher narrative imaginable. Go to Full Review

It’s still enjoyable to watch, but I can’t help but roll my eyes a bit at the way the tribe is depicted as the most evil, bloodthirsty killers imaginable. Go to Full Review

The Green Inferno provides some momentary shocks, but it’s as heavy-handed as anything on Roth’s résumé. Go to Full Review

James W Nov 15 Like so many modern horror films i wasn't sure whether it was more of a comedy. Don't watch whilst eating a red curry like i did. Gory. See more Dave B @DaveB190 Nov 10 Eli Roth's Magnum Opus. One of the goriest big Hollywood movies to date. Suppose you don't want to watch a super gory, bloody movie. I would not recommend this movie. Suppose you want to see Eli Roth excel at what he does best. Then go for it. See more Wayne K Sep 22 Eli Roth’s films are definitely not to everyone’s tastes. Case in point, The Green Inferno. If you love what he does, you’re gonna love this film. If you don’t, then it’s gonna be a long hour and 40 minutes. The film has incredible cinematography, with the most vivid greens and reds you’re likely to see outside of a Dario Argento film. Speaking of Italian directors, Roth clearly idolises the likes of Ruggero Deodato and Umberto Lenzi, as TGI is basically his attempt to make an Amazon cannibal film. Sadly, Roth has used this conceit to essentially do ‘Cabin Fever In the Jungle’. Average acting, bad dialogue and skin-peeling obnoxious characters. The social satire of Holocaust and, to a lesser extent, Ferox is either missing completely or utterly misguided, depending on how you look at it. In Holocaust, it was obvious who the villain was, and the film leant completely into that. Here, the indigenous tribes are either the goodies or the baddies depending on who needs to die or be horribly mutilated. I’ll give the film credit for its intensity and willingness to be gruesome and brutal at the most unexpected moment, and I would definitely recommend it for its sheer balls to the wall insanity, but if you’re looking for something more profound than screaming and dismemberment, you’re better off looking elsewhere. See more Marina P Aug 3 The Green Inferno isn’t just brutal — it’s a mess disguised as social commentary. Yes, the gore is insanely realistic, but when that’s the only thing a movie has to offer, it gets old fast. The characters are hollow, the “activism satire” feels lazy, and the tribe is reduced to a stereotype straight out of a 70s exploitation flick. Instead of shocking with meaning, it shocks for the sake of it. If you’re only here for gore, go ahead. If you want substance, look elsewhere. Rating: ★★ Pull Quotes “All gore, no guts when it comes to story.” “The jungle feels alive, but the script is dead.” “More exploitative than thought-provoking.” See more Tom G Jul 28 Mean spirited and slow. Felt dirty after watching this See more thiago s @Thiagostone Jul 15 Filme fraco, o roteiro é fraco, as cenas de terror são fracas, a história é fraca, o elenco é fraco, e ninguém ajuda a melhorar o filme, os personagens são fracos, e o filme deveria ter cenas bem melhores e relevantes, para fazer o filme ser bom See more Read all reviews
