Critics Consensus

The Green Inferno may not win writer-director Eli Roth many new converts, but fans of his flair for gory spectacle should find it a suitably gruesome diversion.

Jason Bailey Flavorwire It's mostly just sad - not because Roth takes such a sharp scalpel to the social justice movement, but because he swings a baseball bat, and misses by a mile. May 3, 2016 Full Review Mark Kermode Observer (UK) Flat-pack acting, frat-boy screenwriting (the portrayal of activists is spitefully dumb) and retro gore combine with smug throwback neocolonialist racism and unfunny jokes about diarrhoea, dope and Scooby-Doo. Rated: 1/5 Feb 14, 2016 Full Review David Jenkins Little White Lies es, Roth's film has its expected moments of high transgression, but you can never get away from the fact that all these references have been attached to the most hackneyed teen slasher narrative imaginable. Rated: 1/5 Feb 12, 2016 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review The Green Inferno provides some momentary shocks, but it’s as heavy-handed as anything on Roth’s résumé. Rated: 2/4 May 27, 2022 Full Review Jason Adams My New Plaid Pants More goofy than it ever manages scary Jul 2, 2021 Full Review Emma Wolfe SpookyAstronauts This movie tackles a surprising and different kind of storyline yet it is quite predictable. It won't go down is one of my favorites of the year but it was exciting and I found it very amusing and entertaining. Rated: 7/10 Jun 1, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Marina P The Green Inferno isn’t just brutal — it’s a mess disguised as social commentary. Yes, the gore is insanely realistic, but when that’s the only thing a movie has to offer, it gets old fast. The characters are hollow, the “activism satire” feels lazy, and the tribe is reduced to a stereotype straight out of a 70s exploitation flick. Instead of shocking with meaning, it shocks for the sake of it. If you’re only here for gore, go ahead. If you want substance, look elsewhere. Rating: ★★ Pull Quotes “All gore, no guts when it comes to story.” “The jungle feels alive, but the script is dead.” “More exploitative than thought-provoking.” Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/03/25 Full Review Tom G Mean spirited and slow. Felt dirty after watching this Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/28/25 Full Review thiago s Filme fraco, o roteiro é fraco, as cenas de terror são fracas, a história é fraca, o elenco é fraco, e ninguém ajuda a melhorar o filme, os personagens são fracos, e o filme deveria ter cenas bem melhores e relevantes, para fazer o filme ser bom Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/15/25 Full Review Marc C I dug it. It's campy for sure, but I find some interesting topics addressed by it Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/15/25 Full Review Joshua H Okay for what it is but not anything too special Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/30/25 Full Review Jeepers C I loved every minute of this campy cannibal movie. Everyone complaining about this movie being over the top needs to remember that this is a movie about a cannibalistic tribe getting it's forests invaded. The consequences are going to be drastic and no real big plot line is required. How hard is it to see that the tribe was feeling violated and felt the need to retaliate This is a good modern day homage to the blood soaked cannibal movies of the 80's. Thanks, Eli.
