Critics Consensus

The Green Inferno may not win writer-director Eli Roth many new converts, but fans of his flair for gory spectacle should find it a suitably gruesome diversion.

Jason Bailey Flavorwire It's mostly just sad - not because Roth takes such a sharp scalpel to the social justice movement, but because he swings a baseball bat, and misses by a mile. May 3, 2016 Full Review Mark Kermode Observer (UK) Flat-pack acting, frat-boy screenwriting (the portrayal of activists is spitefully dumb) and retro gore combine with smug throwback neocolonialist racism and unfunny jokes about diarrhoea, dope and Scooby-Doo. Rated: 1/5 Feb 14, 2016 Full Review David Jenkins Little White Lies es, Roth's film has its expected moments of high transgression, but you can never get away from the fact that all these references have been attached to the most hackneyed teen slasher narrative imaginable. Rated: 1/5 Feb 12, 2016 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review The Green Inferno provides some momentary shocks, but it’s as heavy-handed as anything on Roth’s résumé. Rated: 2/4 May 27, 2022 Full Review Jason Adams My New Plaid Pants More goofy than it ever manages scary Jul 2, 2021 Full Review Emma Wolfe SpookyAstronauts This movie tackles a surprising and different kind of storyline yet it is quite predictable. It won't go down is one of my favorites of the year but it was exciting and I found it very amusing and entertaining. Rated: 7/10 Jun 1, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Mz. Ghostly Sick, gross, disturbing, and borderline offensive, Eli Roth does what he does best with a film too grotesque and disturbing to look away for fans of the tribal cannibal sub-genre. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/16/25 Full Review Baby S The Green Inferno may not be as Hostel or Cabin Fever but it proves itself to be a cannibalistic vacation disaster . Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/23/24 Full Review David S Eli Roth's first few films established him as a promising filmmaker in the horror genre. However, his late films are lazy, dull, and lack the fun or shock value of those first few. The Green Inferno is no exception to that issue. Roth's desire to pay homage to such horror cult classics as Cannibal Holocaust and Cannibal Ferox is noted. However, he offers a bland, gory film that delivers nothing original. He overplays the sexual exploitation to gain shock, but it ultimately fails to be anything more than a kind of adolescent boy's idea of "shocking." Don't waste your time or sanity. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/10/24 Full Review Audience Member Plot too hard too understand and too silly Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/01/24 Full Review Samm 2 Fantastic! I really liked finally some sincere horror movie, interesting themes like the hypocrisy of many activist groups and the cultural relativism. A great tribute to cannibal movies. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/23/24 Full Review Shawn H I really enjoyed this film. The gore was top notch and the message was great. We should leave these old tribes alone and take care of our rain Forrests. What they do is their business and we should not base their beliefs on ours.
