A.A. Dowd AV Club It's every bit as human-scaled as the filmmaker's other work-but also, in its noble restraint, a little less involving. Rated: B- Nov 2, 2018 Full Review Matt Zoller Seitz RogerEbert.com An unusual and involving if sometimes demanding and difficult movie. Rated: 3/4 Nov 2, 2018 Full Review Robert Abele Los Angeles Times Harder to miss, however, in every grainy 16mm shot and heartfelt performance is the movie's understated soul, as Wang guides us, sometimes awkwardly, usually touchingly, from isolation and secrets into understanding and connection. Nov 1, 2018 Full Review Nathanael Hood Unseen Films Wang spends much of the film flailing for a direction or emotional center for his story and comes away confused and empty. Rated: 3/10 Jan 9, 2020 Full Review Tynan Yanaga Film Inquiry The Grief of Others is a film that externalizes these internal emotions and suggests, even implicitly, it can be absolutely cathartic to share in this process with others. Dec 1, 2018 Full Review Sam Weisberg L.A. Weekly Working with deliberately limited resources, writer-director Patrick Wang revels in technical gaucherie that would hinder lesser filmmakers. dave d The aptly titled, 'The Grief of Others' is gentle and reflective and despite there not being much on the page I found it charming until I didn't. I lost interest about halfway in and I kept battling to really care. How about my grief? I didn't like the way this was shot and the ending well wasn't my cup of tea. It's an ambitious and artistic concept, but it just didn't work for me. Final Score: 4.6/10 Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member The movie lacked in plot and the character archs never finished off. The use of so many characters did not aid in the fact that the cuts were all over the place. Such a trial and error way to film this movie. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Audience Member Rotten tomatoes used to give solid reviews and the reviews are usually right, over the recent years it has fallen short. Critics tend to review based on an overall excellence and many times falls on technicalities rather than how enjoyable a movie can be, as how cinema should be. To entertain! For the one that claimed it's not useful nor necessary, no movies needs to be useful. It's entertainment, you should tune into National Geographic if you need it to be useful. It is as though watching a movie through a TV that has discolouration on the screen and say the movie is bad. I loved this movie and I have personally chosen to watch a lot of movies that rotten tomatoes rates it at 100% and it end up sucking. Recommend them to many and many called it bad movie even. The movie review was a page turner and from now onwards, rotten tomatoes rating is no longer credible to me. Movie goers are not directors, we watch it as regular people. If you wanna comment it like directors, perhaps a page that is made for directors and producers would be better. Good movie, watch it and don't believe this rotten tomatoes weak robotic critics review. If it sucked, I am wrong. If it isn't, be like me and stop giving rotten tomatoes so much credibility anymore. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member it was the worst thing i saw in my life Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Moving, touching, delicate, inspired.
