The Hand That Rocks The Cradle

What to Know

Critics Consensus

A flat and unnecessary remake that squanders its premise on convoluted plotting and meager thrills, The Hand That Rocks The Cradle is salvaged only slightly by Maika Monroe's committed performance.

This movie is not lurid enough. I wanted tawdry, cheesy early 90's thriller, and this doesn't hard enough into that. Go to Full Review

I didn’t believe a word of it. Convoluted barely describes the explanations put forth. But this is Halloween season, people, and we take our thrills and chills when they come. Go to Full Review

Winstead gives it her all but Monroe fails to give anyone the creeps. Go to Full Review

As a cultural document, the movie is revealing, and more politically correct and psychologically responsible. But it’s not very compelling either. Go to Full Review

The remake of the 90s title seeks its own tone but fails to generate the interest that its predecessor did, largely due to its script excesses. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

The production makes an admirable effort to update the plot to reflect modern conflicts (gender, class, trauma). However, it pales in comparison to the transcendence and lasting impact of the classic that inspired it. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Dawn R @Person-a-la-Dee 4h Bold storytelling is not what I would call this film. Totally ripped on the title and concept of the original 1992 film by having the antagonist have the alternate name of Rebecca, but ultimately this movie is an amalgamation of a bunch of different 90s suspense flicks, right down to the dead stare and blonde locks of the antagonist, a la Alicia Silverstone in The Crush. This film was reminiscent of Single White Female, dash of Fatal Attraction, some Wild Things, a touch of the Crush and a sprinkle of The Craft from the 90s era. See more Tru C @CineGeek 2d This was 1hr 42 minutes of time I can’t get back. As a fan of the first movie with Rebecca DeMornay as the unhinged antagonist , I felt this retooling of the plot was undercooked, unwarranted, and unnecessary. The character development was nonexistent. The airhead husband, the angsty daughter and meth head wife with the shady past were some of the most unbelievable protagonist I’ve ever seen on film to date. I will say the stop sign lady and infant were pretty good actresses though. I hope this review saves someone the trouble. See more Chanelle W 2d This remake was unwanted. Stick to the original script for any classic remake. The acting was poor and unbelievable. The husband was the worst character. It was hard to enjoy the film. The only good thing was the adorable baby. See more Pat K @PatKast 3d This could've really been a great movie, except Hollywood writers who are out of touch with reality, had to screw up this remake. They made this movie to include a typical gay theme. The writers make the husband Latino (which is fine) but paint him as ignorant, dumb & clueless. Why?! I love how Hollywood loves to make us men look dumb and clueless. The oldest girl is a brat and the mother they had to give her some Crazy issues, so no one believes her. There are also some unnecessary scenes in this movie, like the bloody tampon, the lesbian sex scene and the gore from bashing a man's head in with a baseball bat. This movie is poorly done and I'm congratulating myself for making it thru this movie. Ending was exciting, though. I'd skip this one if I was you. In fact watch the 1992 film instead. See more Marco L @decatur555 4d This remake feels unnecessary from the very beginning. Instead of offering a new perspective, it delivers a hollow and diluted version of a story that already worked perfectly. The script lacks coherence, relying on forced twists and shifting motivations that never feel earned. Any sense of suspense or unease that made the original effective is replaced by noise and artificial intensity. Despite a capable cast, the characters never fully come to life, trapped in material that gives them little to work with. Visually flat and narratively empty, the film feels more like disposable content than a meaningful reinterpretation. A disappointing remake that adds nothing and ultimately diminishes what came before. See more Tim M @tgmacman Dec 20 The Hand That Rocks the Cradle remake is admirably more interested in fostering grounded storytelling, but that comes at the cost of genre inconsistency and lax presentation.
