Tim Cogshell FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) This movie manages to do correctly what a film like Don't Look Up did so badly, which is to have a political point of view and believe in it while knowing that not everyone on your side of the camp is great while not everyone on the other side is evil. Mar 30, 2022 Full Review Nell Minow Movie Mom The best thing about the movie is its refusal to make any character one-dimensional or completely unsympathetic, especially when we find our own expectations challenged. Rated: B- Mar 17, 2022 Full Review Benjamin Franz Film Threat Generally, I found The Hater charming and lovable. Rated: 8/10 May 17, 2022 Full Review Carla Hay Culture Mix Once you get past all the obnoxious ranting by the movie's main character, The Hater is a comedy-drama that has as much to say about political and cultural wars in America as it does about family, female empowerment, and the grieving process. Mar 25, 2022 Full Review Monique Jones Common Sense Media This dramedy has a worthy message about politics, but it presents it in an a slightly messy way. Rated: 3/5 Mar 21, 2022 Full Review Christian Toto HollywoodInToto.com Political comedy proves short on laughs but offers empathy for Red State USA. The H Honestly one of the best movies I've watched. Didn't know what it was about going into it, when I found out it was a political movie, I was going to turn it off but decided not to & glad I didn't. Covers a lot of true stuff like people blind voting for their parties when not actually seeing what's going on behind scenes or what they're truly voting for. I wish they showed more of the rivalry stuff between the candidates, the fact that she's going up against her old nemesis is a funny premise, but they didn't do too much with it. Her grandpa cracked me up & I wanted to see more of him as well. I will say her bond/building friendship with her campaign manager really made me enjoy the film more than I would have without her, the fact she had to fake being someone she isn't to win people over but also kind of saw their way of living was enlightening about how you can be around others even if you don't agree with them on all topics, but also can find common ground. Great film that every Voter should watch. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/10/25 Full Review Jordan H Had me on the edge of my seat Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/13/24 Full Review Audience Member Excellent, funny, insightful, both satirical and kind, ironical and direct. Treats all characters with respect and eschews simplistic answers, all while making you laugh. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/16/22 Full Review Ben E Here we have a wonderful idea for a film with numerous strong scenes, well put together, with the strengths of sympathy and nuance. Unfortunately, for me, it all led to a muddled and dispassionate anticlimactic conclusion unworthy of the film leading to it. Note also that the film is a drama, not a comedy. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 07/26/22 Full Review Audience Member This film is a gem. Takes on politics in such a unique way - everything grounded in fact, performances grounded, but it goes bananas. Will watch again. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member So funny, so moving. So mature. So refreshing to see someone from Hollywood treat the rest of the country like they're not idiots. Such important themes, but never heavy handed. LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!
