Critics Consensus

The Hollars gathers an impressive assortment of talented stars; unfortunately, it's all in service of a story that's been played out more effectively in countless other indie dramedies.

Marjorie Baumgarten Austin Chronicle A standard-issue family reunion dramedy, The Hollars has several genuine moments of human interaction. Rated: 2.5/5 Sep 15, 2016 Full Review John Hartl Seattle Times Krasinski, who also directed the film, may have spread himself too thin; there's a desperation about the closing scenes, cluttered as they are with bouncy pop songs on the soundtrack. Rated: 2.5/4 Sep 15, 2016 Full Review Tirdad Derakhshani Philadelphia Inquirer Opening with a promising first act comprising well-observed, edgy humor, the film ends with an overdose of treacle so syrupy, so pungent, it will unsettle the strongest tummy. Rated: 2/4 Sep 8, 2016 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy An agonizing exercise in indie quirk. Rated: 1.5/4 Aug 18, 2021 Full Review Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com It sure is all familiar yet it all resonates with such emotional honesty that you're unlikely to care that you've been down this cinematic road before. Rated: 3.0/4.0 Sep 10, 2020 Full Review David Lamble Bay Area Reporter Martindale deftly pulls off the trick of stealing a whole movie from an all-star ensemble. Tina N Unlike most of the reviews I thought it was good! I mean it wouldn’t win any awards but it was funny and definitely worth a watch! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/27/25 Full Review John M All-star cast, Pop Warner script. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/03/25 Full Review Steven W A boring and slow paced movie! Not worth the two hours. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/21/25 Full Review Myrna S I loved the chemistry of the actors, but hated the ending! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/28/24 Full Review kagey We had never heard of this movie - so went in with ZERO expectations... and was quickly immersed into a quirky, heart-warming tale of a midwestern (?) family who have every reason to give up, but keep fighting. It's a "small" story with a fantastic ensemble cast who really make the small personal moments feel real and poignant. Overall - it doesn't break any new ground in the indie world... but it was very entertaining and the pacing was great. There were some predictable life events - but that's what made it a good movie. This film reminds me of ULEE'S GOLD - another small independent movie that had an idea and theme, and carried it through to the end. It's a smart movie well worth your time. It is a bit sentimental which some may find sappy - but we really enjoyed it. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/05/23 Full Review Angela V It may be true that the plot is predictable but the actors make it worth checking out. The 4 main characters and members of the Hollar family are superb! Each bring so much depth and love to their characters, seriously amazing actors. It really did make me laugh and make me cry…what more do u need? Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/08/23 Full Review Read all reviews
