Rated: 3.5/4 Apr 1, 2007 Full Review Jim Emerson Chicago Sun-Times A horror thriller, a political satire, a dysfunctional family comedy, and a touching melodrama, Bong Joon-ho's The Host is also one helluva monster movie. Rated: 3.5/4 Apr 1, 2007 Full Review Marc Savlov Austin Chronicle Comes up with not only a fistful of nervous pools of fear but also a heady wellspring of classic monster-movie matinee fun. Rated: 3.5/5 Mar 31, 2007 Full Review Joshua Polanski There Were No Gods Left The Host, in addition to being a wonderful family drama and a fun creature flick, serves as a critique of American consumerism, and in particular, the way Americans treat the world itself as a commodity. Oz S I just finished watching the Korean film The Host (2006) and honestly, I didn’t like it at all. The pacing felt uneven, the acting was over-exaggerated, and the dialogue along with the overall plot came across as silly, with nearly every character making foolish decisions. Watching it almost 20 years after its release, the CGI has not aged well, and despite all the buzz surrounding the film, I couldn’t connect to any scene or moment. On the positive side, the film does manage to capture some striking atmosphere around the Han River, and the creature design itself was creative for its time. Still, to me it was a very disappointing experience, and while I’ll give it a few extra points for being a Korean production, I rate it only 2/10. Not recommended. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/18/25 Full Review Rick R This director, Bong Joun Ho, is tops. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/06/25 Full Review Audience Member Scares me as a Scary movie 3 does, Bad guión, bad narrative, definitely not a 9.3 Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/02/25 Full Review Gage H Halfway through this movie I didn’t really see the appeal.. it was only once the movie was over that I started to realize what a good movie this was. The monster is just the face of the evil. The real culprit is the environmental pollution & stupid government politics. This movie had more up its sleeve than I thought it did. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/18/25 Full Review Kenny A Eerie and somber, but incredibly affective, "The Host (2006)" shines as a beacon of South Korean cinema and the best allegorical monster movie since "Godzilla (1954)." Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/14/25 Full Review Malcolm M I watched the English dubbed version. SURELY the translation was very poor. I don't care that the dubbing didn't match closely their mouth movements. But, the dialog was inane. Frankly, I do not understand how this movie has a 93% on here. The special effects are horrible, the story line basic, the dialog inane to unintelligible and nonsensical. The acting might be good, hard to tell with the movie getting in the way. At some points in the movie it was almost impossible to follow. Frankly, a little girl getting dragged into the water that powerfully would be dead or seriously injured. Yet, she is walking about. There is so much wrong with this film, it is horrible. You would be more entertained watching reruns of commercials for some personal injury lawyer than this. There were a few spots that will lmake you jump. the rest is pure boredom to confusion. 93%? My spouse picked this movie tonight and she is apologizing to the kids for making them watch such a seriously BAD movie. IF you are considering watching this movie, stop, take some sleeping pills or drink a fifth of rum and tomorrow you will be better off. even with the hangover. And, I actually like to watch cut-rate B-movies. This makes Ed Wood look like a genius. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/22/25 Full Review Read all reviews
