Charlie R The story follows a couple, André and Vera, who are trying to pitch their health app at a major competition to secure investors. But before attending the competition, Vera decides to try hypnotherapy to quit smoking, and things get strange from there. The movie has many second-hand embarrassing moments that would make you feel uncomfortable. They say it’s a dark comedy, but it’s not funny at all. It's mostly awkward, embarrassing, and uncomfortable. The acting, especially by Asta Kamma August as Vera, is really good and brings the characters to life. At the start, I thought she was cute, but as the film progressed, she turned out to be nothing but a 'yelai paithiyam da' character. It felt like a Yorgos Lanthimos-style movie, both in tone and in the characters. If you are gonna watch it, be prepared for some awkward laughs and a lot of second-hand embarrassment! I found this very funny and key scenes (e.g., puppy scenes) had me laughing out loud. The awkwardness and desperation in the networking, the performative-ness, and the intellectualization of everything were all spot on. Also, both leads are excellent but I have to extra applaud Asta Kamma August. However, there are competing ideas / messages that distract from, and therefore somewhat weaken, one another and the overall plot. Slightly underbaked but close to being awesome!!
