What to Know

Critics Consensus

Liam Neeson remains a top-tier action hero; unfortunately, like a number of his recent genre outings, The Ice Road is a downhill trundle paved with predictability.

Even with Liam Neeson at the wheel, the predictable Ice Road doesn't lead anywhere worth going.

David Fear Rolling Stone The ratio of exposition-heavy dialogue to things-a-real-person-would-say lines is roughly 20 to 1. Any bit of visual wit that manages to slip through feels accidental. Rated: 1/5 Aug 2, 2021 Full Review Randy Myers San Jose Mercury News The setup has potential, with trapped miners needing saving but icy roads making rescue efforts difficult. But it hits the skids and ends up formulaic and cliched. Rated: 1.5/4 Jul 1, 2021 Full Review Robert Levin Newsday Piles cliches atop cliches with an end result of mush - not content to be the story of a dramatic rescue, it's also a conspiracy movie and a revenge thriller. Rated: 1/4 Jul 1, 2021 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews ...almost inherently compelling subject matter that’s slowly-but-surely squandered by filmmaker Hensleigh... Rated: 1.5/4 Sep 22, 2024 Full Review Joshua Polanski Boston Hassle The action itself is, technically speaking, good. But the stakes of the action are contrived, with cartoonish insurance agency antagonists who may as well have stepped out of a children’s movie like Sonic the Hedgehog or Detective Pikachu. Rebecca W Im surprised by the negative reviews, we really enjoyed it. Full of suspense and fun action scenes. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/25/25 Full Review Matt G I have no idea why so many people dogged on this movie. It's a damn fun popcorn action flick. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/25/25 Full Review BadNews R Liam Neeson has carved out a very particular niche in Hollywood over the past two decades. Ever since Taken cemented him as an unexpected action star, studios have been eager to replicate that formula, often at the expense of originality. The Ice Road is yet another entry in this growing list of Neeson-led thrillers, and while it isn’t unwatchable, it does little to break new ground. The film positions Neeson as a rugged hero—once again a man pushed into dangerous circumstances where his grit, determination, and physicality are put to the test. The problem is that we’ve seen this exact template before, and not just once. Much of the narrative feels copy-and-paste, as though the script was tailored specifically to Neeson’s strengths without any effort to innovate or challenge him. Instead of a story designed to grip the audience, it feels more like a vehicle designed to keep Neeson in familiar territory. The direction compounds this issue. Rather than crafting suspense or giving the audience a reason to invest emotionally, the film leans heavily on recycled tropes and set pieces. What could have been an intense, claustrophobic survival thriller set against the unforgiving backdrop of icy roads instead plays out like a routine action flick with little imagination. Casting choices don’t help either—several supporting roles feel unnecessary, more like filler than purposeful additions to the story, dragging down the momentum. The screenplay is perhaps the weakest link. You can almost sense the writer bending the narrative to fit Neeson’s established persona rather than focusing on crafting a compelling, layered story. This approach leaves the film feeling hollow. A more daring choice might have been to cast against type or shift the focus to fresh character dynamics, but instead the script doubles down on predictability. That being said, Neeson himself remains committed. At nearly 70, he still brings physicality and gravitas to the role, and his mere presence can elevate otherwise thin material. For diehard fans of his action work, The Ice Road offers more of the same—familiar rhythms, familiar stakes, and familiar thrills. There is comfort in that predictability, and some viewers may appreciate it. For others, however, the lack of creativity will be hard to ignore. The Ice Road isn’t a terrible film, but it’s a forgettable one. It underscores both Neeson’s remarkable longevity as an actor and the risk of creative stagnation when a formula is repeated too often. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 09/21/25 Full Review Brian C. Great suspense. I enjoyed it Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/21/25 Full Review Loochang P A movie also needs to be personally appealing because it gives you something. 'The Ice Road' has its action and suspense. I watched it and I liked it. It doesn't pretend to be more than it is. Is it predictable? In part, but you still have a good couple of hours. I also like Liam even though time is weighing on him too. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/17/25 Full Review Horror fan 4 A fun popcorn type of movie. Liam is badass and the ice road driving was intense.
