The Ice Road

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Liam Neeson remains a top-tier action hero; unfortunately, like a number of his recent genre outings, The Ice Road is a downhill trundle paved with predictability.

Even with Liam Neeson at the wheel, the predictable Ice Road doesn't lead anywhere worth going.

David Fear Rolling Stone The ratio of exposition-heavy dialogue to things-a-real-person-would-say lines is roughly 20 to 1. Any bit of visual wit that manages to slip through feels accidental. Rated: 1/5 Aug 2, 2021 Full Review Randy Myers San Jose Mercury News The setup has potential, with trapped miners needing saving but icy roads making rescue efforts difficult. But it hits the skids and ends up formulaic and cliched. Rated: 1.5/4 Jul 1, 2021 Full Review Robert Levin Newsday Piles cliches atop cliches with an end result of mush - not content to be the story of a dramatic rescue, it's also a conspiracy movie and a revenge thriller. Rated: 1/4 Jul 1, 2021 Full Review Joshua Polanski Boston Hassle The action itself is, technically speaking, good. But the stakes of the action are contrived, with cartoonish insurance agency antagonists who may as well have stepped out of a children’s movie like Sonic the Hedgehog or Detective Pikachu. Jul 19, 2024 Full Review Aaron Phillips But Why Tho? A Geek Community The Ice Road all the right variables for an interesting film, layered with tension and suspense which is only aided by the casting...Ultimately though, the film’s dialogue is very poor, the performances aren’t great...It’s safe to skip this one. Rated: 5/10 Jan 16, 2023 Full Review Cris Kennedy The Canberra Times (Australia) Liam Neeson is, as ever, a stoic and credible leading man. Like his character in this and every other recent film, he is dependable and the kind of bloke you're happy to spend some time with. Rated: 3/5 Aug 17, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

June M I’m from the UK but have lived in Canada for over 20 years,so I know the weather and the cold. I felt the cast and crew did a pretty good job getting that across. The ice roads are vital but scary as hell and anyone who works on them has my respect,so many people rely on them for a lot. The film was gritty in places, I loved the bond between the brothers, shame one of them had to die. But it was well worth a watch and I’d like to watch it again, which says a lot from me.a film has to be pretty good for me to say that. My advice is read up a bit about ice truckers, grab a blankie and some snacks and just sit back and be entertained. Liam Neeson although older now still has my respect. He pulled it off, it was really worth watching!. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/13/24 Full Review Grant L This film is action paked with quite a lot of sadness please ignore all the other reviews that say 1 star because that is simply not true i think they are just hatters. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/09/24 Full Review Lee C I wish I could say something positive about this film, but it’s quite possibly one of THE worst films I’ve ever watched. My advice is to just not bother. I’m saving you almost 2 hours of your life. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/07/24 Full Review Sam W A ‘so bad it’s good’ disaster movie, but only just. Whilst the concept of having a rag-tag crew of big rig drivers embark on a noble mission against time and the extremes of nature to save those in peril holds some merit, the actual plot comes across as silly and very unrealistic. Combine this with the incredulous action scenes, cheap CGI, dodgy editing, weak dialogue, wooden acting and some incredibly daft death scenes, and you have an entertaining but bad film. Had it been more cheesy and ridiculous or more serious and gritty it could have been great; as it is, it’s just another B-movie. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/04/24 Full Review Greg H If they had actually watched a few episodes of ice road truckers it could have been better without the stereotyped villains. Effects, what little they used were a bit straight to video quality. Never going to be an intellectual script given the storyline, it is what it is. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 07/03/24 Full Review Becky H Liam is always worth a watch, but unfortunately the plot has many holes and implausible actions leading to a bit of a disappointing viewing. On a cold, rainy day it's worth a watch, but it's not popcorn worthy. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 07/03/24 Full Review Read all reviews
