Audience Member I was surprised at how captivated I became the longer I watched. It isn't exciting or explosive, nor is it a mega-blockbuster or a masterpiece of cinema, What it is, however, is seemingly honest and straightforward about the hierarchical structure of the then Soviet Union, as well as being a rich, characterful drama. The writing is really good, and the characters' relationships are spot on. For a relatively closed setting, it keeps you engaged, and there are moments of tension. I didn't like some of the more clunky subplots - like the scenes set in Russia, involving the spouses of both Captains, for instance... they didn't really add anything, or deliver an emotional element different to what is already created between the main characters.
