While not exactly exposing revelatory truths, The Ides of March is a supremely well-acted drama that moves at a measured, confident clip.

Ron R Fabulous cast. Great acting. Engaging story. There are some glaring holes in the plot. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/24/24 Full Review Alik E incredible character arcs and story lines. incredibly well done Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/20/24 Full Review Diana L. S Very well acted and directed. Clooney and Gosling are always good and on the money. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/15/24 Full Review Nawt W The writing is very rich and never dips into feeling forced or sappy. Desplat's score is positively energetic and really helps in many scenes. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/30/23 Full Review Ruhaan A well paced then the character arc and ending felt rushed Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/21/23 Full Review Ian E Unrealistic and melodramatic. The central character arc--an idealist (Ryan Gosling) who turns cynic because, you know, politics is mean--is unbelievable and incoherent. First of all because the transformation improbably takes place over the course of a single scene of the film. Second, because he's not a believable idealist (or character generally) to begin with. One striking example is the opening of the film, in which Gosling's character runs a sound test, starting with lines from his beloved candidate's speech before descending into ridicule: "Don't vote for me. I don't want your votes!" In the first half of the film, he repeatedly professes, and shows, undying devotion to his candidate and the good of the Republic, and yet he reveals no discernable ideology, passion, or interest in policy. Ides of March relies on a series of absurd plot points: a meeting between two staff members of opposing presidential campaigns is treated as the juiciest and most disastrous possible scandal, while a top campaign official doesn't think twice about illegally dipping from campaign funds to pay for an abortion for an intern he's sleeping with and then driving her to an abortion clinic. The film's greatest strength is its excellent cast and their performances, but in the absence of original themes or a compelling story for them to portray, The Ides of March comes out to a tale, told by top-notch actors, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. Kelsey Wallace Bitch Media Morris and Meyers may have treated Stearns as disposable, but the filmmakers shouldn't have, and we as viewers shouldn't have to either.
