Geoffrey Nowell-Smith Sight & Sound Nothing in the film quite fulfils the promise of the opening moment... But L'Innocente is nevertheless a remarkable film. Mar 31, 2020 Full Review Vincent Canby New York Times Visconti's last film (completed in 1976 shortly before his death) and among the most beautiful and severely disciplined films he has ever made. Feb 14, 2020 Full Review Gary Arnold Washington Post The Innocent is classy but droopy, definitely the sort of art movie to avoid after a long hard day. Despite a story destined to take hideously melodramatic turns, the movie remains sedate and formal. Feb 14, 2020 Full Review Naomi Deutscher Spare Rib Visconti seems to exploit the rising independence of women by having them occasionally utter strong words, but never enabling or allowing them to put them into practice. Sep 22, 2021 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com While the parameters of The Innocent are far less epic than most of Visconti's most noted productions, his final venture is as lavish and opulent as all that had come before. Rated: 4/5 Aug 4, 2020 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Many have hailed it a masterpiece, but it's comparatively minor next to 1963's powerhouse The Leopard, another Visconti dissection of aristocratic angst. Audience Member Beautiful to look at, great music, themes of passion amidst depravity. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member Beautifully photographed and intelligently directed. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Giannini was dark, charming and obsessive in all the right places... O'Neill was seductive and worldly-wise... Morelli was endearing and funny... all in all a good film by Visconti. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review jack c Giannini is great at glowering and looking brooding over his women, and Laura Antonelli is still one of the most beautiful women in the world. But it's not one of Visconti's best as it feels like ground he's tread before, and better (Senso anyone?) Only now it's in the 70's so he can show some (very erotic I must say) nudity and sex, and the story does take some powerful turns in his operatic style. for fans it'll be a treat, and for casual viewers it's at least acceptable, with some shots and scenes really magnificent. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member opulent decor & costumes make this period drama stand out. a doomed tale of a couple's search for acceptance and love in the wrong places. the mother (morelli) has some hilarious lines though. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review walter m "L'Innocente" is a methodically plotted film whose sumptuous visuals belie the inner decay occurring amongst the aristocracy in 19th century Italy. In creating this world of endless formalities, functions and fencing, director Luchino Visconti may have succeeded too well as the story stagnates before slowly building to its unforgettable climax and finale. At the center of this world are Tullio(Giancarlo Giannini) and Giuliana(Laura Antonelli) Hermil, trapped in a loveless marriage of convenience. He is obsessed with his mistress Teresa(Jennifer O'Neill) who spurns him at a party for the company of Count Egano(Massimo Girotti).
