Andrew Barker Variety This initially droll, then increasingly nightmarish tale has atmosphere to spare along with some good jolts. Nov 19, 2015 Full Review C.J. Prince Way Too Indie Even though some of Juras' attempts don't entirely work, it's still nice to see someone actually trying to do something different. Jun 3, 2019 Full Review Carolyn Mauricette Cinema Axis The Interior is a psychological horror that will take your breath away, especially if you are a fan of David Lynch style weirdness. May 17, 2019 Full Review Adrian Mack Georgia Straight The Interior pulls off an unlikely transformation from absurdist comedy to authentically disturbing psychological horror. It barely makes a wrong move along the way. Aug 24, 2016 Full Review Amanda Waltz The Film Stage It's worth overlooking The Interior's lopsided narrative structure in order to enjoy all the stylish, trippy, genuinely frightening moments it has to offer. Audience Member At least it was short. Not even remotely scary. Completely inexplicable (and whoever claims that an inexplicable plot somehow "elevates" a movie is an apologist for lazy writing or a lack of good ideas). McFadden was fine, but not amount of talent in an actor can save a movie when there's no "there" there. I kept waiting for something compelling to happen, and then suddenly it was over. So unsatisfying. The critic review rating enticed me to buy the movie on digital — shame on me for forgetting that self-proclaimed film critics are out of touch and basically just in love with their own writing. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Audience Member The movie had a very solid start. Not having heard of it before, but noticing it 100% Tomato meter score, I thought it was a diamond in the rough that just hadn't found a wider audience yet. Soon, though, it became evident why.... Switching genres and style takes a director with a deft hand and a gentle touch. This movie, however, violently hammered mood shifts onto the audience. When it remained grounded in reality, there was definitely a great atmosphere and quality to it. But when the director seemingly got bored, it devolved into a drug or illness-induced mania. Attempting to interject a conceited artistry at random points, with classical overtures to unintelligible running around with flashlights, the movie lost its flow entirely. A skilled producer should have reigned in this childish lack of self-control by the director, but sadly he was given carte blanche to do with the film whatever he wished. Like a spoiled birthday boy demanding everyone cater to his every whim, the main character was basically left floundering without a plot to hold onto (and the protagonist was the only saving grace with in this movie). No clue how it got an 100% rating amongst critics, but if anything this goes to show that movie critics don't need to actually qualify their ratings with strengths of the film. In fact, reading the top critic reviews, you wonder if they even saw the same movie. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Absolutely awful. I wish I could get my 2 dollars i spent to rent it back. Not scary at all, mediocre acting, mediocre writing. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member How many times can you watch a man pitch a tent? I lost count. This movie at best should of been made into a short film. The film lacks dialogue, direction and failed to keep my interest. The movie is absurdly stupid and pointless. It takes you into plotlines that end abruptly without rhyme or reason. This movie was a huge let down and I now consider it to be the worst movie I have ever had to sit through and witness. The acting is horrible and lifeless. I do not recommend this movie to anyone 👎🏻 Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Had to stop after 20min bc couldn't see any hope in this movie improving. It's got some dry humour which was ok, but that's literally it. It's extremely low budget and unfortunately you're reminded of that during every scene. Would definitely not recommend this. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member I just watched this film last night, and I have to say, I watch a lot of horror/thrillers (though not the "murdery" kind, and I haven't been this scared by a movie in a long time. I was absolutely riveted throughout the forest scene and often found myself squinting or holding my fingers in front of my eyes because some of the moments were so tense, and I didn't know what was going to happen. Trevor Juras, who both wrote and directed the film, did an excellent job of scaring me without showing me what the terror was. That is the best kind of writing. The actors he chose for this film were completely convincing and excellent. And lastly, I just want to say that I could really relate to the protagonist and feel what it was like to be in his position. Believe me, that is NOT a position I ever want to be in, which made the film all the more tense. And, although some viewers felt the ending was ambiguous, I thought it made perfect sense. There may be some room for interpretation, but I was able to make my own interpretation quite easily. Not sure if that's what Juras was going for, but it felt like enough of a resolution for me, and he still didn't set us free of the tension by showing us exactly what or who we should be afraid of. I hope Juras keeps making movies this well. I'll be on the lookout for his next project because I am truly impressed with this debut feature.
