Dennis Harvey Variety The Jones Family Singers are a multigenerational Texas gospel ensemble profiled in Alan Berg's unsatisfying documentary. Mar 20, 2015 Full Review C.J. Prince Way Too Indie Once the album is finished, Berg switches back into making his film about the Jones' getting their due, a disappointing and conventional choice. Audience Member Alan Berg's film should be fascinating. It isn't. He squanders an amazing opportunity to follow a family musical ministry striving to get their voices heard without selling out on their religious beliefs. We know this family has talent. We know this family has faith. And by the time Berg's documentary reaches its end we know that this family has made significant strides. The problem is we do not ever get to actually know anyone in the family. Their shared story is presented in a limited way and their individual stories are fairly unmentioned. This film is about a musical family with roots in religion and soulful music. This movie is wise to avoid a deep inspection of religion, but a bit of soul could have made a great difference.
