Audience Member "The Kick" is a 2011 family friendly movie that features a family of Taekwondo practitioners that come under attack by a gang of ruthless international thieves. The action thriller was directed by Prachya Pinkaew (Ong Bak, Chocolate). The film's plot centers around a Taekwondo Master whose son prevents thieves from stealing a treasured Thai artifact. The situation turns critical when the mastermind of the operation kidnaps the young hero's family, prompting him on a treacherous rescue mission that will test his true abilities. The film's title revolves around the son's failed attempts to master the famed Taekwondo Tornado kick as his father presses him to try out for Thailand's Olympic Taekwondo team. The mastery of the kick assumes important symbolism in the climax of the film. The film is light hearted fun. While it has violence, there is no gore, nudity, or vulgarity. The film is subtitled, which may limit appeal to U.S. viewers, but it is now Free on most streaming services, including Amazon Prime and Tubi. Out of 4 stars I would give the film a review of 2 stars, but I would add a 1/2 a star for Taekwondo enthusiasts because the film does feature many scenes of signature Taekwondo kicking and demonstrations. (2.5/4) Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member The Kick is a pretty fine martial arts movie, but suffers from many of the genre's trappings that many have ironed out in the past few decades. The main problems with this movie are two central facets: First, the plot is somewhat nonsensical, with numerous events that make minimal sense, clearly injected solely so the plot can move forward, and Hero vs Hero conflicts that could easily be avoided if the character just TALK once in a while. The biggest one of these is the Father vs Son dynamic, which is so unnecessary, and only serves to make the Father woefully unlikable until the final act. This is a shame because not only are the actual fight sequences solid, but the cast does have some genuine charisma, especially the Father (which makes his character's unlikability all the worse). If you love great fight sequences, I strongly recommend checking this movie out for these, but know that I would not recommend watching this movie at all if not for these. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member martial arta action good but tha family=cheesy! Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member It was a good mixed martial arts movie. However, there are so many exaggerated fights in the film. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member The father from Moebius has a wife and three kids he brings with him to Thailand to teach Taw Kwon Do. A lot of the focus is on the son, real-life Tae Kwon Do champ Na Tae-joo. He spins and kicks a lot of people in the head. During the credits you can see why so many of the hits look authentic, he really kicked people in the head. The effects are pretty sad, but there are some nice fight scenes. Plus, it's directed by Pinkaew, so naturally Jeeja and Mum are featured. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member As a comedy picture with a lot of kicks, it's enjoyable. See it as: "The Taekwondo Incredibles Family". Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Read all reviews
