Over the next two years, Billy guns down the culprits one by one, always staying just out of the law's reach -- until Sheriff Pat Garrett (Frank Wilcox) catches up with him.

Nick F The Kid From Texas is a well-made and engaging film about the life and times of the notorious outlaw Billy The Kid – but it is a highly fictionalised and romanticised version. Made in 1950 and starring Western favourite Audie Murphy, it portrays Billy The Kid – also known as William H. Bonney – as a nice young man who became an avenging outlaw only after his friend and mentor was killed. However, the known historical facts about Bonney tell a very different story. Billy started thieving aged just 15, killed his first man aged 18, and was shot dead when he was just 22. By then he had killed at least four men, and it is thought killed several others. In this film, Audie Murphy plays Billy as a clean-cut, polite young man forced into crime just to avenge the death of his friend. It’s a good storyline, written by Robert Hardy Andrews and Karl Kamb, and the film is ably directed by Kurt Neumann. The cast, which includes Albert Dekker and Gale Storm, give solid performances and the inevitable gunfights are well-staged, so the film is enjoyable. Yet it does have a rather hollow ring, as it is so far from the truth about this famous but ruthless outlaw. REVIEWED by Nick Fletcher.
