From his 6th floor balcony in downtown Vienna, eight-year-old Friederich "Fred" Biermann watches with excitement as Hitler's parade passes, celebrating Germany's takeover of Austria. The year is 1938, and Friederich is Jewish. The next day, his blonde girlfriend fails to show up for their usual walk to school; and the teacher locks bewildered Fred in a small, dark closet for the entire day. Pulled from school by his parents, Fred then watches as the Nazis seize his father's transportation business, and paint swastikas on the fleet of bright orange, familiar "Biermann" trucks. A family friend becomes a Nazi official and paints a swastika on the Biermanns' door to protect them. The Biermanns' apartment becomes a safehouse. The Biermanns soon decide to flee with just he clothes on their backs. After being rejected by Switzerland, they cross the French border on foot under the cover of night. After living in a squalid hotel for carnival workers in Paris, Fred's mother negotiates with a ship captain in Marseilles for transport to Palestine. The Biermanns sail in the bowels of the ship with the horses of French Foreign Legionnaires, who let Fred ride the horses, to his delight. The Biermanns emerge from the European ship into the Middle Eastern World of Palestine. Eight year old Fred's life is about to change forever.

Touching and inspiring story of a boy whose family escaped from Nazi-occupied Austria and found their way to Palestine where he was forced to grow up too fast to become a leader of men fighting to establish an Israeli homeland. A story of courage, loss, sacrifice and love of country. I was blown away! This documentary focuses on Fred Biermann, a Jewish boy from Vienna, who witnessed life changing during Hilter’s initial ascent to power. Fred’s family was fortunate to leave Vienna for Paris, resourcefully paying for the train fare with pieces of his mother’s jewelry. After Paris, the family immigrated to Palestine. This film’s perfection was based on the manner in which the filmmakers captured 95 year old Fred’s narrative: crystal clear, funny, tragic and illuminating. As the film showed, Fred met many important figures, and was assigned very important roles of leadership and oversight. He was truly a Kid Officer and had a knack for relationships, befriending Jews and Arabs, alike. The footage from Fred’s life, and his stories, gave the film almost an “action movie” feel. Kudos to John and his team! At the end of the film, Fred appeared for live Q&A. What a treat!! See more Leo R @Leo_R May 17 The Kid Officer is an extraordinary and deeply moving film.
