Sheri Linden Los Angeles Times Block wears his neuroses so guilelessly on his sleeve and organizes his material with such skill, that what might have been insufferable navel-gazing attains poignancy. Rated: 3/5 Nov 11, 2010 Full Review Joseph Jon Lanthier Slant Magazine Regardless of the cause, the prevalence of empty-nest anxiety among baby boomers isn't terribly flattering to their conception of domestic relationships. Rated: 2/4 Oct 31, 2010 Full Review Nick Schager Lessons of Darkness Unwittingly provides a glimpse of the unhealthy and potentially damaging parental desire to preserve and memorialize every second of family life. Rated: B- Oct 29, 2010 Full Review Chris Hewitt St. Paul Pioneer Press Assembled with clarity and taste, "The Kids Grow Up" is a beautiful film in which every single minute feels alive and true. Rated: 3.5/4 Feb 25, 2011 Full Review Ron Wilkinson Monsters and Critics A very slow and easygoing look at the simplest things in life, which turn out to be not so simple. Have a cup of coffee before this one. Rated: 5/10 Nov 5, 2010 Full Review John P. McCarthy Boxoffice Magazine Ranks as one of the best non-fiction films of the year. Audience Member I loved 51 Birch Street, but I felt like this film went too far in filming Block's own relationship with his daughter in what became an intrusive way. His daughter was uncomfortable with much of his documenting of her life once she became an adolescent and even when in tears she told him how much she hated it, he kept the camera rolling. It seemed insensitive & disrespectful. No wonder she went to college on the opposite coast! As his stepson said at one point "time to get over it." "It" being the handringing over Lucy growing up. 3 stars because it kept me interested & I loved Lucy & his wife. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie wants to be a chronicling of a life from birth to college, a look at what it's like for your child to grow up and move away to college. What it becomes is a study of a man who viewed his daughter's life through a camera lens and failed to make a real connection to her. It's not great filmmaking, but it's interesting. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member pretty interesting... kind of sad... honest and normal Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Different and often macabre representation of a father daughter relationship, however 17 years of life can not be condensed into just 90 minutes so it's a very disjointed watch - although a great use for the home video collection rather than see them just collect dust. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member Plot:v.good(4/5) S-Fx:No Emotional pull:Yes(+0.5) Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Interesting doc about the relationship between a father & daughter (a whole family really) and how they grow together and how they deal with saying goodbye before she leaves for college (and adulthood).
