Critics Consensus

While The King is sometimes less than the sum of its impressive parts, strong source material and gripping performances make this a period drama worth hailing.

Angie Han Mashable The King is so laden with the trappings of profundity and prestige that in the end, it smothers itself to death. Dec 6, 2019 Full Review Adam Kempenaar Filmspotting The plays are about [Hal's] youth and immaturity - his unreadiness to be king - and Chalamet captures that impetuousness. Rated: 4/5 Nov 22, 2019 Full Review Brad Newsome Sydney Morning Herald Almost everything about The King works brilliantly, from the casting (not least Robert Pattinson as a deliciously detestable Dauphin) to the generally cracking script by Michôd and Edgerton. Nov 13, 2019 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews Filmmaker Michôd delivers a slow-moving yet perpetually engrossing endeavor that benefits from its atmospheric visuals and surfeit of captivating performances... Rated: 3.5/4 Nov 8, 2022 Full Review Jane Freebury The Canberra Times (Australia) Kings and kingship are not in themselves such a fashionable subject for audiences today, but the question of good leadership and how to govern is as relevant today as it has always been, and will not go away. Rated: 4/5 Aug 23, 2022 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies “The King” does a good job reinventing Shakespeare’s characters and using them to offer up a meaningful critique of imperialism and the politics of war. Martin W Fantastic! It's depressingly rare to find a intelligently written and directed movie these days. More like this please! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/18/25 Full Review Lee Y Excellent movie, compelling storyline, great cinematography, acting and battle scene. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/25/25 Full Review Lisa B I absolutely enjoyed it while having little to no knowledge about the actual historical circumstances. All i can say that it had me glued to the screen from beginning to end and the performace of the actors were incredible. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/23/25 Full Review SkyRo P Timothée Chalamet is one of those actors who consistently puts himself out there to engage and captivate audiences. In "The King," a film released on Netflix, he takes on a medieval role as a young monarch striving to assert his power and prove himself. The film presents a fresh perspective on the challenges of leadership. Chalamet not only showcases his remarkable acting skills but also solidifies his status as a true movie star. Unlike many actors who might gravitate toward lighthearted roles or superhero franchises, he is strategically selecting projects that highlight his talent and keep him in the conversation for awards—demonstrating a commitment to meaningful filmmaking without compromising his artistic integrity. That said, the film does feel a bit lengthy at times. There are moments when it drags, making it difficult to remain engaged with the narrative. I believe some scenes could have benefited from more creative world-building to immerse viewers in the medieval experience, rather than merely presenting it as a historical account where viewers are primarily there for Chalamet's performance. While the film delivers on some levels, it lacks a certain excitement that would elevate it to the status of a true cinematic masterpiece. It doesn’t quite have that rewatchability factor that I often look for; if a film doesn’t hold up upon a second viewing, it may struggle to stand the test of time. Although I appreciated "The King" for its initial viewing experience, I don't feel compelled to revisit it. It’s a solid film that I enjoyed, but ultimately, it feels more like a one-time experience rather than a classic worth returning to. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/23/25 Full Review Trent G One of the best movies on Netflix. Maybe the best. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/08/25 Full Review Audience Member This movie is way underrated and I’m not sure why it’s not talked about more especially in regards to Chalamets performance. I’ve seen it 4 times and each time I enjoy it more and more. It’s so well designed and seamless. Every time I watch it there’s new things I notice and appreciate. I’m always especially in awe of the closings scenes. Most flawless execution of a “plot twist” delivered by Timmy and Lilly. Regardless of if a viewer was able to predict it or not. Overall 10/10 story and delivery. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/29/24 Full Review Read all reviews
