BadNews R The Kiss List follows a high school girl who suddenly finds herself at the center of an embarrassing rumor started by her own best friend—that she’s a bad kisser. Determined to clear her name, she creates a “kiss list” as a way of proving to everyone (and maybe herself) that she’s not the awkward, clumsy kisser people are making her out to be. On paper, that setup sounds like it should be a fun teen comedy—something silly, lighthearted, and full of charm. Unfortunately, the movie fumbles nearly every opportunity to deliver. The humor just doesn’t land. Jokes feel forced, misplaced, and awkwardly executed, leaving more cringe than laughter. Instead of leaning into clever high school comedy with relatable teen awkwardness, the film ends up feeling messy and unfocused. It constantly struggles to grab the audience’s attention, and even when it looks like the story is about to find its rhythm, it collapses back into uneven pacing and unfunny dialogue. What really threw me off was how overstuffed it felt. The “kiss list” concept could’ve been a tight, fun plotline, but then the movie adds extra layers—like a sudden bisexual angle—that feel less like organic storytelling and more like the writers trying too hard to be “edgy” or “current.” It’s not that representation is bad, but here it comes across as clumsy and shoehorned in. Combine that with unnecessary subplots and an overall lack of charm, and the film feels like it’s trying to check boxes instead of tell a genuinely good story. In the end, The Kiss List doesn’t succeed as a comedy, a coming-of-age story, or even as guilty-pleasure entertainment. The direction is weak, the writing is scattered, and the energy never clicks the way a teen comedy should. I went in hoping for something fun, maybe along the lines of She’s All That or Easy A, but instead got a disjointed mess that missed the point of its own premise. Verdict: I don’t recommend this film. It’s one of those ideas that sounds great as a pitch, but the execution is so far off that it never finds its footing.
