Noel Murray Los Angeles Times “The Lair” doesn’t finish as spectacularly as it starts; but that just means it’s a good genre picture and not a great one. Oct 29, 2022 Full Review Simon Abrams RogerEbert.com The Lair checks off some genre fans’ qualitative boxes, thanks in part to co-writer/director Neil Marshall’s knack for top-this violence, post-spaghetti-western war movie repartee, and general eye for action filmmaking. Rated: 2.5/4 Oct 28, 2022 Full Review Jeannette Catsoulis New York Times Aside from Hadi Khanjanpour, as a coolheaded Afghan prisoner, the acting is pretty awful, though the script is so clunky and the characters so clichéd it’s tough to blame the performers. Oct 27, 2022 Full Review Jennie Kermode Eye for Film Much more fun than, by any reasonable standard, it ought to be. Rated: 3.5/5 Jul 17, 2023 Full Review Keri O'Shea Warped Perspective Treat genre film like a cheapo catch-all, super-simple star vehicle, and its fans will revolt; insincerity and pastiche are tough to overlook. Jul 13, 2023 Full Review Daniel Gorman In Review Online The Lair is a dress rehearsal to work out the kinks, not a final product released to an unsuspecting public. alex It’s a very slow movie the action parts are meh characters are meh Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/29/22 Full Review The R If you want to jump into this to just try and get something out of a horror flick - you need to totally turn off your brain - and probably being just a little bit drunk would not hurt either. The dialog is really bad. I get the feeling that there was no American military advisor on this one at all. Everything from the uniforms to the jargon is just off. The accents are just bad - to the point of being distracting. My guess is they were all Brits or Australians and they really should have just gone with that. The "story" would not have suffered one bit by changing the nationality of the soldiers involved. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 07/15/24 Full Review Alec B Neil Marshall's directing skills almost overcome the bad performances and clunky dialogue . . . Almost. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/26/24 Full Review Michael Antony A Mikey's Film Review: The Lair (2022) Director and fellow Geordie, Neil Marshall returns to his pulpy horror roots with a mash up of his greatest hits, namely ‘Dog Soldiers' (2002) and ‘The Descent' (2006). Sadly, The Lair doesn't come anywhere close to the quirky, inventive, bloody B-movie delights of those 2 films. Charlotte Kirk (Marshall's real life wife) plays Kate Sinclair, an Royal Air Force pilot shot down in Afghanistan by insurgents. After stumbling into an abandoned Russian military bunker she accidently unleases a hoard of alien/human hybrids with only one thing on their mind - blood! What starts off as a clichéd but fun premise soon descends into an overlong slog of misfit soldiers churning out clunky dialogue with some ropey acting - especially Miss Kirk! It's sadly not even bad in a fun way, it's just so ‘average'. It moves at a brisk enough pace and there are a couple of well choreographed action set pieces scattered throughout, but this is another disappointing effort (after Hellboy, Doomsday and The Reckoning) from a director who showed such early promise... Mikey's Film Rating: 2/5* Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/27/23 Full Review Tony F How could a talented film maker like Neil Marshall (Dog soldiers) produce such a disappointing, uninspired movie? Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/09/23 Full Review Jeff H I don't really get (or agree) with the bad reviews. Pretty good flick, good special effects and most performances good. Implausible backstory but good action throughout. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/17/23 Full Review Read all reviews
