Trevor Johnston Radio Times Wolf Rilla often brought an outsider's eye to his journeyman assignments, and though the film is modest in impact, it offers a fascinating snapshot of post-war attitudes. Rated: 3/5 Jul 22, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Nick F The Large Rope, made In 1953, is a fairly ordinary crime film with reliable Donald Houston wrongly accused of the murder of a girl in a close-knit English village. While the film is unremarkable, it does give a fascinating insight into post-war village life, with its gossip, its characters and its prejudices. Houston, who has returned to the village after a three year prison term, is bitter and intense as the main suspect when a village flirt is found dead. Houston just wants a reunion with his former girlfriend, the lovely Susan Shaw, but with the police and a village mob on his trail, he has to try to clear his name. The pace of the film picks up as the storyline reaches a climax, but that is the only real drama in an otherwise mundane movie. However, the saving grace is a vivid and engaging portrayal of 1950s village life. Reviewed by NICK FLETCHER. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/14/24 Full Review Read all reviews
