What to Know

Critics Consensus

Slight but entertaining, The Last Blockbuster doesn't add much to the saga of the fallen video rental store, but should satisfy nostalgic customers in the mood for a quick diversion.

Peter Debruge Variety More entertaining than educational, but just informative enough to do the trick... Mar 16, 2021 Full Review Peter Rainer FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) Too much nostalgia... They're getting all moan-y about this stuff, and it's a little too hard to take. Dec 22, 2020 Full Review Christy Lemire FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) It is so redundant, so repetitive, and so stretched out with various people saying the same thing over and over again. It relies very heavily on a lot of middle-aged white dudes to mansplain why going to rent a video was important. Dec 22, 2020 Full Review Greg Carlson Vague Visages As the latest addition to the growing subgenre of documentaries about home video’s tumultuous and exciting journey, The Last Blockbuster fleshes out one more chapter in the saga. Jul 28, 2023 Full Review Steven Warner In Review Online The whole thing goes down easily enough, but substance is hard to come by. Jun 5, 2021 Full Review Santiago Alverú Cinemanía (Spain) Could have included more diversity in its testimonials... [but] as an analysis of what really happened, is an exceptional story [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 4/5 May 27, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Peter W Overall, I found this documentary to be rather fun and pleasing as it takes its audiences on a trip down memory lane. Having worked in a Video Ezy store as a teenager, I felt I had a special connection with this feature. It is quite insightful as we discover how video stores came to be and the journey of the major retailer who once had over 9,000 stores, eventually reducing to only one store in the world. Once there was a time when people used to select a film and at the same time have a human connection or even a deep discussion with others. It is certainly a different kind of history lesson and one that all movie lovers should witness. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/07/23 Full Review Pusheen P It's alright, it's a fine watch if your bored and there's nothing to watch, I didn't have any specific issues with it but the reason I don't really like it is the characters feel a bit one damentional, and the story a bit bland, it has good representation but some of it feels quite forced Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/19/23 Full Review James B While it was interesting hearing about the rise and fall of Blockbuster I felt that there were some parts of this movie that were lacking. I felt like it deviated from being about the story of Blockbuster and instead followed customers around the last remaining Blockbuster. It just felt to me that it was unecessary. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/16/23 Full Review stephen b Touches on an interesting tale, but fills the time with random B-List scenarios with little connection to the actual story. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/12/23 Full Review Karen D This brought back so many memories, pretty repetitive but if you were there before then this movie is nostalgic Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review corkball Cute and nostalgic for sure, and you feel for the manager, but there are too many problems here, mainly: 1) the movie is far too padded. This could have been a 20 minute youtube video. I REALLY liked the details around the last store, but even the rise and fall of Blockbuster wasn't that interesting. 2) They even allude to this in the film - Blockbuster was a bunch of opportunistic corporate parasites that destroyed ('innovated') everything in their path and they most likely deserved what they got (mom and pop shop excepted). 3) The whole documentary style is becoming a bit passe. The could have spiced it up a tad (think something like 'Oversimplified') Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
