Robert W The premise of "The Last Day of Retrograde" is equal parts coming-of-age, exploring one's sexuality, generational disparity, and ribald comedy, including a hastily assembled but expertly executed commedia dell'arte performance. There are dark themes, including actual and threatened young adult suicide, and some uneven acting, but it was a fun watch overall. One of the, shall we say, more senior characters in the film is Ida, played by Sherri Z. Heller. She has one of the funniest lines in the film, soon after we meet her for the first time, She is also sensible and grounded, in stark contrast to her screen daughter and granddaughter. Sarah Silva-James, who plays Fetsy, the central character, is thoughtful and compassionate, but also impetuous and occasionally hot-tempered. Her on-again, off-again boyfriend Skylar (Winston Wang) is at turns sweet and combative. Fetsy's lover, Brie (Samantha Alexa) has a unique life's mission. And Katie (Gisele Matocq) is adorbs. (For me at age 70 to use "adorbs" is a first, but there is no other way to describe her.) Oh, and who has not had a high school guidance counselor with questionable boundaries?
