But the love relationship between Steven & Yasim is so thin, not grounded and unrealistic as it's so forcefully made (in order to be Steven's motivation to drive him get involved deeper & deeper). There was a time when the english claimed territories for their own and used a disease that could discriminately kill the enemy and not them. Smallpox, and to lesser degree, tuberculosis and other childhood diseases. Transpose this mentality to a near future and we understand the english roots of the Last enemy. It is a very well rendered tale of an onmipotent and ominous government that although wanting to be good, allow evil and does evil to contain it. We really feel the greyness of the of good and bad with the english. From my point of view, the lesser evil is still evil and we end up questionning ourselves about the possibility of uprooting all evils in the human world. My take is: don't put the english in charge of this! Which explains the state of the world now and the difficulty with so many evils to contain. And I don't mean only muslims extremists, but all greedy evils.
