Critics Consensus

The Last Movie Star has a few poignant moments thanks to Burt Reynolds and Ariel Winter, but their performances are stranded in a middling drama unworthy of their efforts.

David Edelstein New York Magazine/Vulture The Last Movie Star strikes a note of banality in its first sequence from which it rarely deviates. Apr 2, 2018 Full Review Peter Travers Rolling Stone In a threadbare movie that doesn't deserve him, Burt Reynolds-playing a fictional version of himself- reminds us what a great actor he can be. Rated: 2/4 Mar 31, 2018 Full Review Sheila O'Malley RogerEbert.com As a commentary on Reynolds' career trajectory, The Last Movie Star is hit-or-miss. What is undeniable, though, is the space Rifkin has created where Reynolds can do what Reynolds does best. Rated: 3/4 Mar 30, 2018 Full Review Jamie Healy Radio Times More than just a misty-eyed meditation on ageing, this is a celebration of the star's life in all but name and, like the late, great man himself, is not without its considerable charm. Rated: 3/5 Jul 1, 2024 Full Review Roger Friedman Showbiz 411 Rifkin has made a very clever turn for Reynolds- whom he obviously adores- in Dog Years. Oct 12, 2020 Full Review Lisa Johnson Mandell AtHomeInHollywood.com The Last Movie Star aka Dog Years, directed by director Adam Rifkin, is Burt Reynolds' swan song, and a poignant and entertaining treasure. The Great John A Quite a emotional film yet so sincere and honest with a few comedic moments. However I thought Ariel Winter was actually very good in acting (just as good as Reynolds) with a lot of lines memorised perfectly. But Burt here did steal the limelight from anyone who crossed him as he was fantastic. Lots of great scenes however I think this new gen and old gen collaboration is a bit too of a repeated trope nowadays. (especially with coming of age films and family films too.) But I would not listen to the critics on this one as they are (always) wrong with indie films. Overall cool watch but would be a bit a 😴😴 for gen alpha. Grade: B+ Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/20/23 Full Review Kyle M Familiar gimmick specially treated as semi-celebrative portrait for Burt Reynolds with unexpected humble turns after awkward, cringey bumps, manageably made up throughout by good performances alongside his co-stars Ariel Winters and Chevy Chase. (B) Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/15/23 Full Review Travis F This was such an excellent movie. It's a story about life, growing old and what's important. Absolutely loved it! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review adam b Goddamnit. This film felt so personal to Burt Reynolds. So emotional I can't even. Reynolds is one of the few actors that I can say I've seen most of his films. This was.... fuck man. RIP to the one of the greatest actors to grace the screen.
