Phil Hoad Guardian This modern western is a case of Mo’ Country for Old Men, though not in an especially good way. Rated: 2/5 Oct 3, 2022 Full Review Tim Cogshell FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) This is a film with a lot of good performances that gets off to a really good start... It loses the thread in the third act. I was really disappointed. Rated: C+ Jun 24, 2022 Full Review Joel Copling Spectrum Culture If the plot sounds familiar, it’s more of an homage to the Coen Brothers than a rip-off; but in the end, it’s all too simple. Debi J No known plot, makes no sense and is boring Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/24/22 Full Review Kyle F Ali Larter's performance is the best thing in the movie. She's entirely believable in the role. The plot is week and the twist is telegraphed IMO. If you like the genre it will be worth the time. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/02/22 Full Review Audience Member This was a great film, reminded me of No Country for Old Men and Ron Perlman was fantastic. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Some very funny low budget moments, the location filming was decent, the climax was bizarre. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review dan b Started out good but went downhill fast and big waste of time Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review ronald h "The Last Victim" has been largely regarded by critics as a Coen brothers ripoff, but so have a couple of dozen other films that try to mix humor with violence and pathos. So I'm not going there. The prevalence of these comparisons by reviewers says more about the Coens' colossal influence than anything else. And endlessly referencing Coen brothers films makes it difficult to evaluate films on their own merit……or lack thereof. In this case, we have a noir western with an evil bad guy, Jake, played by Ralph Ineson; the grizzled sheriff Hickey, played by the always-welcome Ron Perlman; and a hapless traveling married couple (Ali Larter and Tahmoh Penikett, the latter of whom doesn't last long). There is a crime going on which I won't describe, but I will reveal that Larter's character ends up running from Jake and his moronic helpers. She's actually the best thing in the movie. Camille Legg provides some comic relief as Hickey's nerdy deputy–--and she plays a major part in the movie's first ridiculous plot twist. There's another one later. There's a lot of voice-over narration by the gravel voiced Ineson (most of which is so mealy mouthed that I found it incomprehensible), and a really awful music soundtrack by a whining folk singer who sounds like she's faking a southern accent. Later, there's some equally insipid country rock. Whoever chose the music for this movie should find another job. The final section of the movie descends into outright absurdity—-not that it had far to fall in the first place. Well, there: I wrote a review of a western noir without any comparisons to The Brothers. I'll simply conclude by saying that The Brothers make better movies. Much better.
