isla s This is a sad story, an intriguing one but I felt it was too trivialised and it didn't really grip or engross me. The direction the film goes, plot wise, was a bit obvious, so I'd say its pretty predictable but I suppose in a sense it had to be, given the time its set in (the 1910s). However, I did like some of the settings, the period drama based settings with the house that Eva stays in being quite pretty in some regards, with paintings, nice furniture and the like. In the first hour or so it felt, to me, that this film was a bit like a TV movie, as there wasn't a great deal of plot development - it felt a bit plodding, although, to be fair, the performances from the main cast weren't bad at all but it didn't seem to be a particularly big budget type of film. I did feel sorry for the main character, Eva and I think it did reasonably well at showing things from her point of view. Certainly her father comes across quite cold, I assume out of a hidden sense of guilt and anxiety over the reaction she'll get if people see her but it certainly wasn't hard to feel for Eva being so hidden away. However, it started to appeal more to me around about half way through the film, when the plot does develop more and there is some better camerawork - some low level shots taken, as if someone is glancing at the area slowly from low down. It is a somewhat thought provoking watch about a taboo - society being fearful of those who look different. Its not a bad film, its not brilliant, its an interesting watch, if inevitably sad and sobering and if it doesn't appeal much in the first half, I'd say its worth sticking with and if your a fan of period dramas then its particularly worth seeing. I felt it was re-assuring that there were people prepared to help Ava too. I should perhaps also note that this is a Norwegian film, its available dubbed in English, generic American accents, which maybe cheapened it a little but at least thats an option if you hate subtitles. Its worth a watch if the story interests you. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
