Donald Clarke Irish Times There are unmistakable shadows of The Turn of the Screw in Brian O'Malley's modestly successful ghost story. Rated: 3/5 Mar 13, 2018 Full Review Simon Abrams RogerEbert.com The Lodgers disappoints on a number of levels, many of which have more to do with the limitations of its creators' imagination than the apparently minuscule budget. Rated: 1.5/4 Feb 23, 2018 Full Review Noel Murray Los Angeles Times For viewers who take it more as a moody, metaphorical historical drama than as an out-and-out horror film, there's a lot in this lush-looking, sensitively acted picture to recommend. Feb 22, 2018 Full Review Ryan Larson Ghastly Grinning The Lodgers is subtle in it's horror, and in it's beauty, a fantastic period piece that's well worth the watch. Jun 24, 2020 Full Review Matt Donato Flickering Myth A case of less not being more; the audience lulled into a state of indifference that O'Malley's suspended underwater climax cannot revive. Rated: 2/5 Nov 6, 2019 Full Review Erick Estrada Cinegarage The audience will find here a couple of sequences with a very good atmosphere, a couple of quite imaginative sequences. Shira K Metaphorical and intriguing- a unique social/historical setting, very E.A.Poe-esque. A slow burn gothic horror with an engaging atmosphere. The visual and story elements are interesting, the pacing subdued and thoughtful. Not for thrill seeking fans, more a film akin to the The Others, The Turning of the Screw and Crimson Peak. Very world immersive and excellent character actors. You wish you could learn more about the soldier and the fate of the female twin. A purposeful commentary about the fall from grace of the deteriorating (inbred) aristocracy to the foils of the 20th century. Also touches on how the rich sacrifice the poor/soldiers to win their personal battles/the soul/possession of their land. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/15/23 Full Review Shane C This movie is great to watch. The filmography, The lake scenes , the art and story is really nice. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/09/23 Full Review Hugo S 1920. Rural Ireland. Two twin brothers living in a sumptuous real estate are oppressed by generational rules supposedly meant to protect them against evil forces. The girl breaks the rules when she meets a boy in a nearby village, provoking these supernatural entities. "The Lodgers" is a gothic story built in a unique set (the famous Loftus Hall). But the plot lacks on substance as its horror layer always plays on the safe side by delivering the usual jump scares. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/07/23 Full Review Isaiah Y Not a very engaging or satisfying film Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/15/20 Full Review Audience Member I enjoyed this film for the acting, and the intriguing plot. However, there really isn't a lot to the film. It is leisurely in its pace, and sets up for a nice climax. Unfortunately, I found the climax underwhelming. While the plot is basically a horror story. There really isn't a lot of horror or scares. I also found the source of the haunting/horror to be kind of bazaar and certainly unique. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member This was a very strange kind of olden-days movie that just dropped the viewer right in the middle of the plot with no explanation. There were creepy whispers, but they were difficult to hear. This was a very strange curse to hold the entire supernatural plot. The ending was extremely odd, disappointing, and with far too many naked people. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Read all reviews
