THE LONELIEST BOY IN THE WORLD is billed as a modern fairytale--except with zombies. When the sheltered and unsocialized Oliver is tasked with making new friends after the sudden and devastating death of his mother, he decides that digging a few up (literally) might be his best bet. However, when he awakens the morning after his excavating escapades, he discovers that his newly acquired friends have mysteriously come to life overnight, launching them all into a series of misadventures as they try to keep their secret safe from neighbors, classmates, and social workers alike.

Sheila O'Malley RogerEbert.com The film relies too heavily on cliche and hopes the audience won't notice. Rated: 1.5/4 Oct 14, 2022 Full Review Simon Abrams TheWrap The gags tend to be so broad and lazy that it’s hard to imagine how this movie’s retro-bait sensibility will appeal to anyone other than the targets of this poisoned-apple crowdpleaser’s toothless criticism. Oct 10, 2022 Full Review Meagan Navarro Bloody Disgusting It’s a simple yet charming story that uses the sitcom format to satirize the nuclear family while offering the protagonist a chance for growth through escapism. The cute zombie comedy makes for an on-the-nose means of coping with death. Rated: 3/5 Aug 26, 2022 Full Review Tina Kakadelis Beyond the Cinerama Dome The Loneliest Boy in the World was made for all the weirdos who never fit in when they were in high school. While the film may not have mastered the juggling act of horror, comedy, and coming of age, it certainly paves a path of its own. Jul 24, 2023 Full Review Rich Cross Starburst A surreal tale that aims to blend the corpse comedy of Weekend at Bernie’s with the macabre motifs of a Tim Burton fantasy, but which ends up strangely devoid of life. Rated: 2/5 Nov 21, 2022 Full Review Tom Cassidy Common Sense Media Delivered with charm and confidence by director Martin Owen, this is a pretty wild ride that draws from horror-comedy classics but manages to forge its own weird world. BRizz 2 The Loneliest Boy in the World Starring: Max Harwood Genre: Horror-Comedy / Psychological Fantasy Review: The Loneliest Boy in the World is an off-the-wall, bizarre film that completely missed the mark for me. Starring Max Harwood, the movie leans heavily into a surreal, pseudo-period style that felt more like a novelty project than an actual story with depth. Visually, it plays like a stylized throwback, but instead of charming, it comes off as gimmicky and disjointed. The tone is awkward from the start. It tries to balance dark psychological themes with quirky comedy, but neither lands in a meaningful way. The plot—centered around a painfully lonely young man and his imagined relationships—wanders without clear direction, and the humor feels forced. Every beat feels like it’s trying too hard to be “cult-classic weird” without the substance or structure to support it. At times, the film dabbles in something darker, hinting at unresolved trauma and even potential matricide. But those moments never get the emotional gravity they deserve—they’re overshadowed by the film’s clunky dialogue and overly theatrical tone. Ultimately, it’s a strange, patchwork movie that can’t seem to decide what it wants to be. It’s not funny enough to be a comedy, not grounded enough to be psychological, and not moving enough to be tragic. Just an awkward, uncomfortable watch from start to finish. Final Thoughts: • Offbeat and disjointed • Visually stylized but emotionally flat • Tries to be weird for the sake of weird • Unenjoyable and forgettable Verdict: A film that aims for cult status but lands in the realm of confused and cringeworthy. Not for me. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/01/25 Full Review Locus P This seems to be made for no one older than a young teenager. So maybe the rating should be higher. At its core, it's about a boy whose mother kept him from socialising with his peers, but he managed to gain confidence after he no longer had her influence in his life (after she died). I like unusual, quirky films, but this one was lacking charm. And it seems the whole story was all in his head, so it left me feeling pretty concerned for the girl the boy ended up with. He's really not okay. Someone please send help. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/15/25 Full Review Stephen C LOL, 1.5 hours of horror comedy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/27/25 Full Review Julian S Charming and vibrant, with thoughtful reflections on loss and mistreatment, though it ultimately remains at a surface level. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/12/25 Full Review Zoey V Weird and boring…that's about it. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/02/23 Full Review PETER W One of the weirdest films I've ever seen. A great flick for Halloween. Its about a young man who lives on his own after being released from a mental institution. He digs up the bodies of dead people and brings them home. They come to life and befriend him. In the end they burn in a fire because he no longer needs them. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/29/23 Full Review Read all reviews
