Critics Consensus

The Lure adds a sexually charged, genre-defying twist to well-established mermaid lore, more than overpowering its flaws through sheer variety and wild ambition.

Dahlia Balcazar Bitch Media It's got teen romance, misandry, cannibalism, and synchronized dancing - what's not to love? Feb 17, 2021 Full Review Britt Ashley Bitch Media I thought the movie did such a great job balancing the fantasy elements of the fairy tale with a grittier contemporary setting. Feb 17, 2021 Full Review Jonathan Romney Film Comment Magazine The Lure is one of those perverse, intense, facetious yet perfectly earnest films that never stops having a good time-although its relentlessness means that the viewer might feel inclined to bow out of the festivities every now and then. Mar 8, 2018 Full Review Giuseppe Sedia Kino Mania The Lure stands also as a cinematic act of love towards Poland’s capital city in the 1980s with its sparkling neon signs, lighthearted nightlife, and ability to knock back gallons of vodka in its best days. Rated: 4/5 Jan 21, 2025 Full Review Michael J. Casey Boulder Weekly Half the fun of this full-blown choreographed musical is that you can't believe what you are seeing. The other half is watching Golden dispatch leering drunks. SkyRo P The Lure is a foreign horror film that, when I first heard about it, had me anticipating something akin to classics like A Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, or Terrifier. Instead, I was met with an unexpected twist: a musical featuring two mermaid sisters who vie for the affection of the same man. The catch? He’s not interested in them because they’re, well, fish. Throughout the film, the mermaids are depicted as alluring yet are mostly nude, and a bizarre element sees their anatomy altered, with their private parts appearing on a fence whenever they emerge from the water. One particularly unsettling scene involves an elderly man taking liberties with one of them. The film also features strange moments when the sisters are in human form, resembling Barbie dolls with exaggerated proportions but lacking any realistic anatomy. Despite the mixed reviews, both critics and audiences seem to have rated it highly, leading me to believe that many viewers are indulging their own fantasies rather than assessing the film’s artistic merit. I refuse to be one of those viewers, as I find that perspective quite troubling. Ultimately, this film misses the mark. It doesn’t belong in the horror genre, aside from a few minor murders scattered throughout. At its core, it's primarily about the fantasy of interacting with a mermaid. While the production quality is decent, it still feels somewhat dated, and the direction is passable at best. In summary, this film simply doesn’t deliver and falls flat as a horror experience. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 05/17/25 Full Review Skirunr S Bizarre film is an understatement. The script removes you from your comfort zone and plops you in a straight jacket chair of uncomfortable mesmerizing amazement. The musical score is an enchanting dare to succumb to the madness and forget this is a musical. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/12/25 Full Review Chrissy C Incredible music, acting, choreography, special effects. And yes, I know what you’re wondering. And yes!! there is fish sex!! so grab some popcorn and get ready to lick some scaley fish tail!! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/11/25 Full Review Kitkat M I gave half a star because we can't vote zero. What a trolling movie. Did they even try? Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/02/24 Full Review Ted C the songs explain the plot all kinds of people dancing in this movie Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/30/24 Full Review Logan D Two mermaids convince a band to allow them to sing. If you desire a teen romance/horror/sexually charged/fantasy musical, I've found your film! This defies categorizing by being unique. I loved the design of the mermaid tales and the fact they portray mermaids accurately. They aren't nice. They're monsters. A zany fun film with some gore tossed in the mix.
