Growing up in in 1976 in an impoverished area of Beijing, Zhou Qing (Zhu Hongmao) becomes friendly with a group of rebellious punk rockers. When he grows older, he gets a boring job at a bathhouse, where customer Zhu Helai (Zhuangzhuang Tian) encourages him to pursue his ambitions. After spending most of the 1980s living in Berlin, Zhou returns home to discover his former friends have fallen into an aimless spiral of drugs and drinking. In despair, he sets out to find his former mentor.
