      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

The Man Who Killed Don Quixote may not live up to long-gestating expectations, but it bears enough of director Terry Gilliam's signature creative stamp to satisfy fans.

K B Couldn't get into this movie. There were some good spots but just didn't hold my attention. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/22/24 Full Review Jeremy _ Just the fact that this film got *made* earns it four stars as a baseline. Then there's a half-star bonus for Terry Gilliam doing what he often does and show us, once again, that passion and imagination are vital if you want to mentally survive in this world. Finally it tip it up to five stars for being, y'know, *good*. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/19/24 Full Review Alec B Given the whole sorted history, its remarkable this thing got made. Unfortunately the final product is a huge mess. This might have been solved by trimming the film but I suspect the length is there to hide the fact that the movie has very little to say. That being said Adam Driver gives a performance that is just so damn good. I wish it was in a better movie. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/08/24 Full Review Anonymous B As others have pointed out, this film is visually imaginative. Unfortunately, even the star power can't rescue it from a mediocre plot and overacting. Subtlety is not Gilliam's strong suit, and this film could have used some. It's an entertaining romp if you haven't anything better to watch. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/12/23 Full Review Jules S One of my favorite movies. Jonathan Pryce should have got an Oscar for this. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/31/23 Full Review Mark R Gilliam has still got it! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/21/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Mark Kermode Kermode & Mayo's Film Review It has a scrappy, indie feel that I like...not for everyone...but an honest and compassionate account, the pain and the ecstasy of the creative process... Feb 12, 2020 Full Review Simran Hans Observer (UK) It'd be easy to map Gilliam on to Grisoni, a film-maker dogged by his artistic misfires and the mess left in their wake. Really, though, he's Quixote, stuck in a noble past and wilfully disconnected from a present that jostles uncomfortably close. Rated: 2/5 Feb 2, 2020 Full Review Glenn Heath Jr. Little White Lies A staggering misfire that's both unambitious and bloated. Rated: 1/5 Jan 31, 2020 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review It's apparent that both the director and his film are interchangeable now. Rated: 4/4 Mar 3, 2022 Full Review Hugo Hernández Valdivia Cinexcepción True to form, Gilliam starts the frenzy early and delivers delirious passages. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 7.5/10 Nov 18, 2021 Full Review Ruth Maramis FlixChatter Film Blog Like most Gilliam's movies, it's definitely not for everyone but I quite enjoyed all the surreal, bizarre & plain weird-ness of it all. The visuals are wonderful, so I recommend this for those who can appreciate his imaginative and peculiar vision. Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 4, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews
