Rory O'Manion (Pierce Brosnan) is a poor worker in Ireland who is hopelessly in love with Rachel Clement (Kate Mulgrew), the wealthy, beautiful daughter of his English landlord. After his mother dies and the Irish Potato Famine strikes, Rory emigrates to the United States, eventually landing in Philadelphia and starting life anew as a businessman.
