Linda Barnard Toronto Star A shockingly honest and often heartbreaking film ... Rated: 3/4 May 10, 2013 Full Review James Adams Globe and Mail A fine directorial debut, at once frank and compassionate. Rated: 3/4 May 10, 2013 Full Review Brian D. Johnson Maclean's Magazine Shawney, who's not about to crudely exploit his own family, treats them with a sensitive touch, and more patience than they deserve. Mixing humour and pathos, he's found backhanded redemption... Aug 13, 2019 Full Review Sarah Gopaul Digital Journal The documentary isn't about the strip club; it's about a family's desire to become physically and emotionally healthy again. Oct 25, 2018 Full Review Brian Gibson Vue Weekly (Edmonton, Alberta) What keeps Cohen's doc from slipping into comic stereotypes or reality-TV programming is his long, worried, head-on stare at his troubled parents. His pained, poignant gaze at them, trapped together but apart in a tawdry business's shadow, fascinates. Audience Member The unexpected was the thread throughout this beautifully emotional film. It portrayed a family in such a way that you were more than just an observer- you were experiencing the turmoil, the love, and the hate too. The editing and producing was unique, and refreshing. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Disappointing. The characters are eccentric, but not all that compelling. The documentary isn't put together all that well and, to make matters worse, it all comes off as self-indulgent since the director is part of the story. The characters are tragic, but don't seem to have much to say and the story doesn't really go anywhere. Oh, and don't expect this to be about the Manor - it isn't. This is strictly the tale of a dysfunctional family. A so-so doc. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
