In this television adaptation of the beloved operetta, set in ancient Japan, a poor tailor named Ko-Ko (John Reed) has been named Lord High Executioner. He is assigned the task of executing an individual before the arrival of the ruling Mikado (Donald Adams). His selection, Nanki-Poo (Philip Potter), just so happens to be the Mikado's son. Ko-Ko is unaware of their relation -- and of the fact that Nanki-Poo only arrived in town after fleeing a betrothal.
