Tim Robey Daily Telegraph (UK) The movie makes less and less effort to keep us up to speed - it's a reasonable assumption that a lot of it's going on inside Rapace's head, but determining precisely how much feels like a fool's errand. Rated: 2/5 Mar 30, 2012 Full Review Empire Magazine Rated: 4/5 Mar 30, 2012 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian It's a great idea for a thriller - but then other plotlines get muddled in, and everything unravels into a cop-out. Rated: 2/5 Mar 29, 2012 Full Review Emma Wolfe SpookyAstronauts The rawness of the film really brings this strange, spooky, style element. Rated: 7/10 Apr 22, 2021 Full Review Joseph Walsh CineVue Rapace's performance is of the highest calibre, demonstrating her dexterity as an actress. Audience Member Its definitely a slowburn that has a monster twist at the end. It gets a bit frustrating to cheer foor the protagonist bc her actions get increasingly manic. At first theres sympathy for her, but that slowly waned away for me. Its a confusing movie after the twist is revealed, as it leaves an ambiguous ending. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member Magnificently played by Noomi Rapace. The slow and insidious decent into uncertain madness was coldly realistic to anyone who has actually seen this happen. There was never a false moment in the portrayal. The realism was heightened by Rapace's uncanny ability to express simultaneously the outer and inner turmoil of her character. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member The Monitor is a tense and paranoia-ridden thriller from Norway, about a mentally unstable mother who begins hearing strange sounds emitting from her son's baby monitor; leading her to relive the abusive nightmare she recently escaped from. The film stars Noomi Rapace as the grief-stricken, single mother who is now overprotective of her son due to her violent ex-husband's wrath, and has moved into a new apartment complex to keep distance from him. Rapace's character is on the verge of a nervous breakdown and her only companion is the lowly, electronics worker she befriends at the store. He also happens to be a bit of a momma's-boy; furthering the themes of overprotected parenting. The film has a supernatural undercurrent with the strange screams heard on the baby monitor, as well as, her son's new friend from school, who seems to act as if she's invisible and he can misbehave at a whim. It is difficult to discuss this film without spoiling its secrets, but know that it is a so-so thriller that gets by on a solid leading performance and the mystery elements will keep you hooked. It's nothing new, but just good enough for a one-time watch! Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Noomi Rapace delivers a great performance and the story keeps you glued to the screen but the ending makes little sense so The Monitor leaves you unsatisfied.
