Private detective Gustavus "Gus" Monk (George Maharis) is accustomed to the sordid side of 1960s San Francisco, so when slimy Mafia lawyer Leo Barnes (William Smithers) offers him a treacherous delivery job, he's hardly surprised. Monk's cargo is an envelope filled with off-color info about a notable mobster. Unfortunately, nothing goes smoothly and Monk's supposedly simple task is soon complicated by murder, betrayal and the seductive Janice Barnes (Janet Leigh).
